There are genealogies in the new testament that put the name of Jesus in a list of all men and traditionally the genealogy in judaism goes by the men.
There are a couple of technical ways around this but that scholars have argued but there's no direct mention in the Bible of Mary being in the Davidic bloodline (which the bible makes a point that the savior should be a part of)
And all this is sorta irrelevant anyway. I'm against Sharira Law being the law of the land here, and biblical law as well. We've moved beyond condoning slavery, death by stoning for adultery, and so on. You can go ahead and not pratice homosexuality all you like to please God but give people equal rights just as we no longer allow slavery despite it's repeated biblical endorsements
Peace
Karl
You know GOD is brilliant. The prophecy has to be fulfilled. The prophecy for Israel's Messiah would come through the direct lineage of King David according to the word of GOD and prophecy.
No matter if you trace Jesus Christ's lineage through the step-father or adopted father Joseph (Paternal) or Mother Mary (Maternal) both have direct lineage to King David.
GOD had to know that Jesus's step-father status would give people issue, so the fact that Jesus's mother also has direct lineage to King David fullfills the prophecy. Both work hand in hand really.
GOD is brilliant. He plays multi-dimensional Chess on levels we can't even begin to imagine. Pretty cool really.

Why do we have two genealogies of Jesus in the Gospels? I agree with a number of leading scholars who understand the two lines represent the lines of Joseph and Mary respectively.
They are both identified as descendents of King David. Matthew gives us the “royal” line of those who actually sat on the throne as descendents of the great king. The other line was the “legal” line of those who descended from the oldest son to the next, even though they never actually reigned as kings on the throne of David.
How do you know this is true? The two genealogies reinforce the testimony of the angel to both Joseph and Mary. The two lines run parallel from Abraham to David. The interesting thing is the historian Matthew gives the lineage of Jesus by way of Solomon the son of David, while Luke traces us to Jesus by way of Nathan another son of David. Therefore, these two genealogies are the lines of two brothers and their families. Luke gives us the genealogy of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Matthew gives us the line of Joseph, the stepfather or adopted father of Jesus. Matthew and Luke both trace the evidence to the Messiah. One gives it through Solomon’s line which was the royal line and the other through Nathan’s which was the legal line.
Why the change from the way marriage and divorce etc., was done in the OT, and now the way it is in the NT? I'll get to that when I can.

Well thanks everyone, this gives me a good idea of what you Americans are thinking, though I'd have say that a supertopo forum is not exactly a accurate cross section of America. I am Canadian and always wonder what you folks will do next. [We were blown away when you elected George Bush for the second time.] My conclusion is that Obama may lose a few votes from this but will also gain some, possibly a net gain. Please don't elect Romney.

"Failed at fixing the economy." That is something I keep hearing from Americans. I think you are not being realistic. The current situation is not something anyone can fix in two years, especially given the mess that Bush left.

Soorrrry Fat. I already predicted that Obama will win a squeaker and nothing will change. Also, no President has ever fixed an economy. A president's policies or lack thereof certainly can have devasting effects on the econony (see e.g. Junior Bush's actions and inaction).

The Canadians posting up about things that "we Americans" do is almost funny.
We were blown away when you elected George Bush for the second time.
So was I and I live in the US. I don't think that national borders makes some people more or less rational than others. People are screwed up all over.

I would agree that "people are screwed up all over." I did not mean to imply that Canadians are any more rational - look who we elected.

So Klimmer
I’d just like to know do cars/trucks go to heaven; the old cars/trucks will need oil; as for newer models that are electric guess there must be somewhere to plug them in? Bicycles and skateboards I guess. It says in Revelation 21:21 “main street of the city was made of pure gold”. What about the side streets what are they made of?
Is there a lot of pollution up there, wait can’t be up there; gold too heavy so must be below the Earth, the City is made of gold as well?
If not looks like we will be doing a lot of walking. Where will we be going or walking to: to eat, see movies, night or do they have night in heaven so is it a nightclub or dayclub? No gayclubs that’s for sure. Are there shops to buy clothes or will all of us wear white? Will the golden city have golden toilets to pee in and where will the pee go, in golden drains to a lake but wait Revelations does not give us a clue.
Since there are no jobs there will be no taxes well that’s good. So it just leaves us with a couple of options: fishing, baking cakes, as for climbing no ropes because if you fall 1000 meters you just get right back up and get to do it again and again and again. Do they have climbing shoes there maybe we will not need them. Paragliding you need wind so is there dust up there making it harder to see things.
What do or what will be talking about over coffee or will it be green tea? Will everyone have the same view on the issues and will these issues be correct? And if everyone is wearing white; what would one say and do to the person that has a different coloured cloth on? Why is he /she different? Trouble maker?
Is it overcrowded up there in this city made of gold, Let’s see over 2000 years of dead people that made it into heaven, people killed in the line of wars, killed in natures misgivings as floods, hurricanes, fires. How wide is that street?
Klimmer says no gays, but will we be suspicious when two men or two women are holding hands as some do in other cultures on Earth together while walking down this golden street?
Will rumour spread when; “Hey! I know that person, he was a woman down in Earth ‘What is she/he doing up here”.
Will there be cell phones? How will we communicate with everyone or find that love one lost 50 years ago. How are they going to recognize us since they died so long ago and we are old and unrecognizable with grey or no hair. Does a 12 year old child when they die stay 12 years old or do they age in heaven? How do we recognize them?
What happens when you are born blind then die blind and go to heaven; what did you miss seeing on Earth where the streets were not paved in gold. What about hearing, guess if you could not hear while living on earth what do you hear there?
What about that nineteen year old marine from the south that was killed in Afghanistan and was waiting to get back to have his first sexual experience with his high school sweetheart when they said to each other just before he was deployed that they would wait till he got back and they were married. What does he get? Does he wait for 80 years for her to finally show up because that is all he had and when she does and says Oh! I remember you but sorry I have three daughters, 8 grandsons and loved somebody else, Ah! What was your name again?
So Klimmer is the streets covered in gold. Don’t tell me this is a metaphor and just symbolism and is not taken literally. If you say that this Revelation is true then your bible could be riddled with lots of different ones making it not the truth.
One more thing Fattie is not an expert on the Middle East. Pretty much like you dumb; sorry should use a better word so not to offensive you since you are so sensitive to criticism, so the word is ignorant. I apologize.

o Klimmer is the streets covered in gold.
You can bet if the streets are covered in Gold, that nobody will give much of a crap about gold.
Sorta like us locals in Yosemite. There are deer everywhere so we don't pay them much attention. The tourists stop and take pictures and it makes the locals lose patience "They are just deer!!"
Of course deer are beautiful amazing creatures until so see em every day

Speaking of deer, Klimmer seems to me to be a deer caught in the existential headlights. Blinded, he could not cope, so he jumped in front of a turbodiesel Bible roaring down the great highway of random spirituality at 75 MPH. Now he's just a red-hot steaming mess of alarmingly lucid hallucinations, night-sweat visions of original sin and apples and trees of life and back-side-of-the-moon alien transport ships and raptures and eternal lakes of fire -- my GOD, he's the guy who read all those hysterical Jack Chick religious comics, drinking them in as though he'd just stumbled on the original tablets of the ten commandments, the unfettered dead sea scrolls, and the unified field theory, all balled up into one simple truth -- pity we're all to obstinate to heed his forlorn voice speaking truth to power, here in the moral vacuum of the supertopian interwebs.
