Bump ..... looking FWD to Friday through Monday fun.
I will not eat at any funky spots in Oakhurst this year, Rilleys tried to kill me last year...
As of now the STONEY contingent might be HUGE... Tremendous even.
We will stake out the same spot we had last year if we can... 100 yds upwind from the trailer.
This way we will not disturb the folks with kids when the campfire gets a little out of hand, like last time, at 12:30.
One of the Fellows wants to know if there is a good place to go shooting?
Justin, got any ideas?
Also....any good stream fishing in any of the hi- creeks,(fly-catch and release) or do you need to go down to the San Joaquin?
anyway... going to bring $$$$ so I have a shot at the big prizes! One of those ropes would be nice.

Best fishing relatively near to you guys would be West Fork of Chiquita Creek...a nice series of stepped pools about 1-2 miles upstream of the road crossing.
A bit more of a drive down Grizzly Road to Lower Chiquita Campground is a pretty good producer either downstream of the bridge or bigger prey again in some upstream pools.
Avoid upstream hiking of Shake flat or Dutch Oven creeks...local rumors have some Hmong grows in the area using the creeks for irrigation.

Ricky D ..... thanks for the info.
about these grows.... any other spots to avoid?
Last fall I went down to North Fork to resupply ice and beer. I was assaulted in the parking lot of the local grocery store at 8:05 am by a most drunken local resident who walked up and started calling me a "WHITE DEVIL" then took a punch at me!
He was so drunk I just side stepped the punch and took the 40 he was 1/2 way done with, put it on the roof of my car, then gave him the old college forearm push back hard and he went down.
The cashier came out of the store and told him to stop or she would call the cops.
Being the non violent person I am I handed the 40 back to him while he was sitting on the ground.... and told him to have a nice day and then I drove off back into the mountains.
So now I know to avoid North Fork..... some tough, shady people in that town for sure.

looks easy from here
mj from m&c?
Going on the assumption I'll make it, I have a fullbody kid's harness and a pair of Eur size 33 climbing shoes I'm more than happy to share, in case anyone with a munchkin is on the fence about coming..
Yeah, same person. Looks like I spoke too soon. Knee got shredded last week, climbing and hiking is out for a bit. Hope to make it out there next time!
Thanks for offering to share your gear.

Hey gang, I'm trying to figure out the directions, looks like it's a little too local for Google Maps... roads as named in directions don't exist in their database.
Does this look right? It's not the same directions, but it looks like it gets through to the spot I can most likely figure as a group camp near Big Sleep... where the gray marker is past the end of what Google recognizes as a road:
If I've got the right destination... is this path accessible via 2WD?

Did you read thru my written direction above? I just looked at google maps for North Fork and it clearly shows 225 leading out of town and changing in name to Mammoth Pool rd.

Phylp, I did read the directions and tried to follow along on google maps, but I couldn't find the turn-off for 7S02, or the specific campground names or other waypoints.
Thanks rincon- that routes me via a different path than the directions given by phylp. It takes me out of North Fork on 274 past Bass Lake, then up Beasore Rd (5S07) to Central Camp Rd to Rd 8029. It ends on Shuteye Peak probably looking down on the Big Sleep area.
So it sounds like I need to just go old-fashioned style turn-by-turn directions and checking the odomoter using Phylp's directions.

Mike, I may be game. I will be up at Bass on 6/20. I'll be probing the area until the further weekend. We're at a cabin near the lake until the next weekend.
We'll be heading up towards the gang at the end of the week. Big Sleep.
EDIT: I can help with projects, Mike.

Is it possible that someone can put up signs (and pretty balloons) to mark the way, or
Someone who knows the way agree to lead a caravan at a certain time from somewhere like Bass Lake?

Just look for the tacos!
Looks like the contingent from SoCal/Stoney Point is going to be substantial this year! Bringing some expats who have moved from Stoney to the central coast with us too.

Awesome Jan, the Stoney crew was responsible for a lot of the laughs last year.
Guyman, haha. Yup that's North Fork for ya. The Exact Center of Class.
As far as shooting, there are many places up there. There is also some alright fishing on Rock Creek pretty close to camp. Chiquito is better and the San Joaquin is the best.
As far as balloons and signs, there will just be one Taco sign this year on the last little turn to the Sleep grounds. The directions posted are sufficient. Basically go through North Fork, drive towards Mammoth Pool, and when you get to Rock Creek campground look for the first left after it. Stay on this dirt rd until you see a Taco sign and turn right. It's pretty simple.
Look forward to seeing you all.

I plan on being up there Friday morning, but I'm still trying to talk my wife into lending me her Forester, rather than my low-ground-clearance sedan (that took a pounding on the relatively mild ride up to Fresno Dome a couple of weekends ago.)
I need to be back in Fresno Saturday afternoon for an ill-timed wedding, but I hope to head back up after those festivities. I've been looking forward to this get-together for months.

A huge pile?
Sounds like what the bear left in my driveway last night :-)
That sounds good, but if I'm up there mid-day I might want to camp closer to the destination. We'll see when it gets closer...
Cheers
