Protection rangers doing their job...

Capitol Reef National Park (UT)
Vandals Pay Over $6 Thousand For Site Restoration

In August, 2010, rangers discovered that vandalism had occurred at an archeological site in the park where historic signatures had been inscribed by famous western personalities Butch Cassidy, Matt Warner, and Silvertip. The recently inscribed names of at least eight individuals, along with the year 2010, were etched into the walls of the alcove near the historic inscriptions. By investigating Facebook postings, rangers were able to identify the responsible individuals as a result of information that they had posted about their recent family reunion in the park. Once identified, members of the group took full responsibility. They paid a total of $6,045 for site restoration under the authority provided by the Park System Resource Protection Act (16USC 19jj). Professional restoration of the site will commence this year. Ranger Brenda Zirwas was the case ranger.

Fattrad, you just underscored Riley's point far more effectively than any of us could ever hope to do.

I would assign her to Camp 4, May 1st - October 31st, 2012

She'll be asked to keep a particularly sharp eye on site #33 during the FaceLift. There is a known troublemaker and loudmouth in that site then, who needs a good smackdown. Noise, improper food storage, feeding non-kosher food to #46, tent outside site, unauthorized occupant (Dick Cheney) in site, associating with denizens of site #30 - the list is endless. Probably needs to be tased, just to be on the safe side.

Fattrad Hah! Well those shocking GGNRA/NPS quotes do remind us that idiots can get jobs anywhere. Why not let them be aired? This incident is all about stupidity.

Anyway GGNRA staff have argued that since off-leash dogs are not allowed in the wilderness of Yosemite, they should not be allowed in the highly modified, urban recreation area of the GGNRA.

And that does go against historical use of California lands.
GGNRA/NPS needs good PR not bad.

I agree with corniss that this incident is all about stupidity - also the arrogance and incompetence of the GGNRA. Thanks for the link to the oceanbeachdog site. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that the morons at GGNRA are totally out of control (and antithetical to what the Park Service should be about).

I do get Fatty's point that providing a false name and "fleeing" is generally very unwise - but this ranger's actions and attitude were infuriating. She and her superiors are 100% to blame.

elcap-Thanks for the info! I was not aware of those cases. Like any less lethal force option there is always a chance of death.

As for this whole thing being the rangers fault....I will not agree with that, even if th ranger over reacted. If the dog walker had given his true name and did not try to walk away he would have gotten a ticket. By lying about his name and then trying to walk away he changed the dynamics of the contact. I am not saying the ranger was right, but I am saying that if dog walker had not made bad decisions, other bad decisions would not have been made.

Remember attitude and demeanor AWAYS go along way in determining how the police handle things. if you are a jerk, disrespectful, attitude, lie, walk away run, etc the police are going to handle things way differently.

Eric,
placing the onus on the idiot with the dog is what a cop does, is it not?

There are two standards to be observed here that are not equal; Joe-Blow idiot and paid professional public servant.

Fatty,
the clip is comedy.

Get it?

It isn't the word from On High.
Real cops are professionals that don't tase people from behind for merely being unco-operative and walking away. If they are walking they are not hard to keep up with.

And I have not had merely one run in with LEOs that behaved criminally.

I take cops like everybody else; on an individual basis.

The sad truth is that even though the clip is comedy it is 100% spot on. pretty much the Only way to not get you ass kicked by the police is to be polite and do everything and anythjing they ask of you. right or wrong. even if they aRE 100% wrong and you do not obey them you Will get your ass kicked and they Will Lie to cover themselfs and their pals.

So if someone on a grassy knoll is tased by a belligerent cop, without cause, and a bystander filmed it, would it be a zap-ruder movie?

It pains me how some people just don't get it in our society. This is a very simple concept. Cop stops guy for [insert infraction]. Cop asks guy for name. Guy gives false name. Cop gets suspicious (after all there are a lot of criminals in this world that would love to keep their real identity hidden). Cop temporarily detains guy (he's not under arrest but the cop wants to make sure he's not a criminal...if he cooperated he would have simply received a citation). Guy flees (walk, run, call it what you want, it's still considered fleeing in the eyes of the law). Cop's suspicions go out the roof. Cop asks guy to stop. Guy doesn't. Guy gets tased (you morons need to stop using the word 'shot'. He wasn't shot, he was tased. Heart condition or not it's VERY unlikely to kill him. Plus who knows how he would have reacted if that cop were to physically stop him). End of story.

Bottom line, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT F*#KING LAW YOU BROKE!!!! That can't be repeated loud enough. If you act suspicious around a cop they are going to want to find out more information about you. Any cop worth a damn will. If you decided to ignore them and walk away you're going to get stopped and placed in custody. BEING PLACED IN CUSTODY [in cuffs] IS NOT BEING PLACED UNDER ARREST!!!! He was given a chance to stop but he didn't. So she tased him. Getting tased is a lot safer than getting tackled. I don't understand why so many people in society think it's ok to just disregard our laws and law enforcement officers. If a cop tells you to stop you stop. Plain and simple. In this case he decided to act suspicious so the cop WAS suspicious. Yet you retards keep focusing on the dogs. Be respectful to LEO's, own up to your mistake, and don't act like an ass. Bravo to that ranger.

NO!!!!

LEO should have used discretion. I can't believe how much leeway sheeple give to the police. Like we've already given up our civil rights to the gestapo neo cops.

So if someone you were about to give either a warning or a simple citation to started acting suspiciously, started walking away, and refused to stop or follow your directions what would you have done as an LEO?

Really!

Lumine is advocating that people behave like sheep.

Getting tased is a lot safer than getting tackled.

For who? And why tackle? He was walking. Couldn't she stick with him waiting for backup if she was too much of a pussy to just get in his grill?
