Actually Blue, the more I see of this the more I think McChrystal really screwed up. He put the President in a very tough position. Obama had no choice but to relieve him. I don't care what the "pundits" are saying. The General ruined his relationships with the diplomats and the White House. It was over.
Worse yet, he left Obama with a terrible choice. To maintain continuity in Afghan the President had to demote Patraeus from where he belongs at CentCom. This creates a real crisis of leadership at a time when we face challenges from Iran and her allies, and a dramatic shift in the politics in Turkey.
Who will be the strategic thinker to fill those shoes, and how long will it take to make the adjustments? In foreign affairs these next few months could be the crux of the Obama Presidency. There is a lot on the line.

Nice post...he gave a no strings attached interview to a counter culture magazine. The man f*#k up big time and is paying the price. He just can't keep his mouth shut.

Kris,
I agree. McChrystal, willing or not, put himself in a compromising position. The least we expect of theater (strange word) commanders is a finely tuned sense of situational awareness.
What about Patraeus wearing two hats, at least for a few months? Anybody worth a damn warming up in the bullpen?

For what, Kris? What did McChrystal say that warranted this? His aides, sure, fire them, but the General who said little?
Nice post...he gave a no strings attached interview to a counter culture magazine.
That remains to be seen.

Maybe it'll be forgotten that McChrystal was the architect of the highly successful Marjah op that routed embedded Taliban from a hotspot. He was prepping Khandahar for the same.
McCrystal considered Marjah a failure and that failure is the reason for the Kandahar slowdown. Marjah was a failure in the same sweep- and-relinquish modality that has represented by all our efforts outside of Kabul in Afghanistan and the green zone in Iraq.

Lincoln got the General he needed, too.
Took a while, though.

Blue,
Do you really think that the Commanding General in a battleground like Afghanistan can remain functional in his post after he has made remarks on the public record which show disrespect for the Ambassador, the Vice President and the President's staff?
I'm not asking you if you agree with McChrystal's assessment. That is not relevant.
He and his staff destroyed their critical relationship of trust with their chain of command. End of story.
I personally do not think the remarks quoted in the article come close to insubordination, which would be a serious challenge to the President. However if Obama tried to reconcile the situation he would be in a lose-lose situation.
The President has made two correct decisions. The third and most critical is yet to come. CentCom.

BLUERING, it is very apparent that you have never Served and know absolutely nothing concerning Military Protocol and the UCMJ.
Usually when people make accusations like that, they provide data that backs up their argument...
after he has made remarks on the public record which show disrespect for the Ambassador, the Vice President and the President's staff?
Did he, Kris? He didn't. Only against Eikenberry. Not the others. It was his aides.

McChrystal's actions of even making one comment regarding his personal opinion of the C-of-C and the Pres to the press is totally against the UCMJ and proper Military Protocol. Especially from the HMFIC of the War Theater Operations/Strategy and him being "In Country". All CO's/OIC's are ultimately responsible for any and all actions that occur under their command/watch.
Chief, what did he say that qualifies him for that??
EDIT: All the pussies pictured in Chief's pic aren't worthy of kissing McChrystal's ass!!! Seriously!
Look up McChrystal's creds...he's a badass warrior. We lost a good man...a Patton.

Hmmm, Gates looks way different to me in profile view. Southpaw dude broke his L arm in 08 & other arm in 09. Ok. carry on.
ps - regardless of my opinion on McChrystal's fate, no one should be held liable for making any disparaging remarks re: Joe Biden... although I think most Biden jokes are really not that funny.

Blue, it's tedious to go through all that B/S.
Suffice to say, Chief is correct in his assessment.
A regular soldier would find himself up on charges, for insubordination.
If you can't keep a rein on your people, then you're no leader.
Plus, it's poor decorum. piss poor style.

I think you guys are full of crap with this BS that he's responsible for what his aides say. So a platoon Srgt is responsible for a grunt mouthing off abouth the prez? Or a general? NO!
Again, I ask you people specifically what he said that was so insubordinate to warrant resignation???
Please tell me, according to the UCMJ! What was out of line?
