I just realized that I’m 63 years old.
I’m too fat to climb but too scared to quit.
Advice?

Lose weight?
Cut the carbs. Cut back a lot on alcohol, especially beer. Walk a lot. It works.
I've dropped almost 20 pounds since this time last year. Almost down to climbing weight.
I knew I had to do it when I was at a climbers event at Shuteye Ridge, and a guy I hadn't seen in w while walked up to me and said "Holy cow Kris, I never thought I'd see you with a belly on you."
Ouch.

Rats! I hoped this was going to provide a link to a new fangled climber's forum?
I had a fresh avatar and password at the ready. Now, all dressed up and nowhere to go: but here ...

Whatever you do don't follow Mark Hudon, I think he's 63 also. I'm 52 and I feel like a complete loser compared to him.
Seriously though I started climbing again about 6 years ago after a long break of 15 years due to a pretty bad back injury. When I got back into it I was overweight and dealing with significant depression from lack of activity due to the injury. I forced myself back outside and just started climbing whenever I could. My advice is just get out and start climbing, the rest will follow. I'm still not super svelt but much lighter than I was and my back is doing a lot better also.

Take up aid climbing.
Lots of folks (on this forum and elsewhere) will assure you it takes no fitness or skill at all.

What did climbing ever do for us anyway?
Check your Gmail account, Malcolm: I got Plan B all queued up!

Just wait till next year. The Beatles‘ “When I’m 64” becomes somewhat haunting and disturbing.

Cut the carbs? Such ignorance.
I eat 80% carbs and weigh 160 at 6'1''.
Cut the processed carbs (and animal products) and replace with whole food plant based products.

Just quit climbing.
It's no big deal at all.
Nobody gives a sh!t anyways except these crazy armchair fanatics here.
There are only 7 people left on this forum anyways, maybe even a couple more at the most.
All worried.
Go bowling or drag racing ..... :-)

I’ll go drag racing fer sure....tons of fun. So Werner, I propose a “time trial” type race on the Valley loop or a sprint from the Valley to Tuolumne! You in?
Peace

Ron, A Time Trial to TM would be awesome. Winner takes everyone to Mammoth for bowling.

hey there, say, malcolm... nice to see you...
say, please, take care of the 'fat issue' ...
you will feel so much better, and there is so much around you,
to enjoy...
as to the climbing... if you are not 'in balance' due to the extra weight,
well, quit, until it is settled...
don't put yourself through un-neccessary stress of forcing it...
in those cases-- something usually goes WRONG... :(
