With all the climbing tribe emergencies we've had these last few months, a few of us threw around the idea of a slush fund that people could contribute to when they had the resources, rather than only when the emergency hits.
Only now we have had another major blow without time for that to develop.
*It seems that we have a young man of our clan who is going to need some support, love and otherwise.
*Is an immediate fund startup for Tyrus necessary?
*We can show our love of John's position amongst us even if we can't send Tyrus to college.
*Are John's folks alive and would the money be appropriate going through them?
*I would nominate someone like Jello to collect and administer the fund, but only if he was willing.
*There may be more appropriate money minded people among us, (You know who you are.)to help work this thing over.
*I'm a bit of a numbskull about money, but I would help in a way that I could.
*I'm a bit broke, but I can come up with a check for this for sure. I've got $50 or $100 to open the door.
I hope I'm not sticking my foot in my mouth somehow. I apologize if I am. If I'm out of line, I will gladly nuke this thread.

Bruce those are great ideas. You continue to show the quality of your character. You are a good man. Times have been tight of late but I will donate everything I can.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like the best way the community at large can support without being intrusive. There should be an account which we can transfer funds to by wire would be my suggestion. Or maybe PayPal?...

I think you're right Dave, but at least this is something we can DO, rather than just wringing our hands.
It is heartwarming to see the great people and "famous" of the climbing world and Supertopo stepping into all those wonderful threads already. Like you....

The money would be great, but we might also be able to help out with some other intangibles, like guys showing up for Tyrus for lunch, hang out time etc. It would mean a ton if a couple guys (strangers at first even) took this on and kept going after the kid, just showing up and being present. He's gonna need it for years to come. I wish I lived closer. I just don't want a kid like this to deal with it alone after the first few weeks of "help" wear off. These things have a tendency to become distant after a couple months. Some sort of organized effort by those who live close would be super cool. One man can make a difference for the long haul. Tyrus is at a fork in the road and I think a good man or two can help him not walk alone.

I saw John around the area, but only met him once about a year ago. I was recovering from back surgery and feeling sorry for myself out at the crag. John gave me an amazing pep talk citing his own recent recovery and really got me motivated again. I live in Mammoth and dont know tyrus, but would love to help. I work as a ski patroller at mammoth mountain so maybe I could help with some of the winter activites.

Passing the hat is great, and I don't put it down, but what is really needed is a well structured fund that can solicit tax deductible contributions from deep pockets.
I spoke with Jello last night after getting the news and know that he feels for Tyrus, but Jeff has his hands full as is so, while I'm sure he appreciates the nod, perhaps we need to look elsewhere.

I have as yet many details to work out, and am still dealing my own sense of loss, but I have decided that one way I can help Tyrus is to again offer up some images I took of John soloing as limited edition prints. We succeeded in raising over $5500 for John back during the aftermath of his accident with this idea, and it seemed like a win/win for all involved, you get a print for your contribution and all the money goes to the cause. It would be a different set of images, some published before and some perhaps not, offered again as 11x14's in editions of 25 going for $75 plus shipping.
I'll post up when I have further information and a webpage. This is something I can handle through my business, so it wouldn't be necessary for whoever was managing a fund for Tyrus be responsible for.

Bruce, of course we need to do this, and I'm incredibly honored that you would nominate me to manage the effort. Unfortunately, of necessity I'm in the process of relinquishing almost all responsibilities - this just isn't something I can take on and do properly. But I will help as much as I'm able.
Fatrad's and Ken's relief fund for climbers is a good model to follow in the long run and is worthy of our support, too. But in honor of John and because Tyrus is young, I think it's good to move now to get donations flowing for his own fund, and then work on a longer-range strategy to grow the fund even while Tyrus gets help in the moment. It's a real challenge.
Ken, Fatrad, could you guys set up a separate fund for Tyrus, similar to the general fund you're working on now?
We need a place/person to send donations to right away.
