Hey everyone, Planet Granite climbing gyms have created a great Climb-a-thon for raising money for the ASCA, and they will MATCH up to $10,000 in donations! There will be two dates - June 27th at Planet Granite in San Francisco, and July 18th at Planet Granite in Sunnyvale. BBQ, beer, prizes, etc!

You can sign up for a personalized online event page, then email it to friends, so it can make the whole "donate-x-when-I-climb-500'-vertical" thing much easier (or your friends can just donate a fixed amount for you):

The traditional paper sponsor packets are available at Planet Granite as well. I'll be at both events with all sorts of old bolts, pulling gear, etc. Hope to see you there!

Also thanks to Clint for the tuning fork & bolt photos (better than any of mine), and Shayd Forest for being the "model" for the poster (when we were replacing bolts on those old unknown routes right of the Dike route on Pywiack).

Sounds fun, but if I am climbing outside and cant make it, I will throw some dollars to ASCA anyhow.

Sounds like good events, especially if there's an adequate supply of beer.

Props to all the rebolters and those who have supported the rebolting cause.

What is the ASCA?

You can participate in one or both events. The minimum sponsorship is $50. From 1p-4p there will be free climbing for all participants, sponsor tables, snacks and fun. After the climbing there will be BBQ, beer, sodas, prizes, etc. for the participants. Enjoy cool music, prizes and booty from our sponsors!

You will need to register for a sponsor packet either online or visit the front desk of your local Planet Granite
Register now so that you can start fundraising. You can register as a team or individual. For more information about how the Climb-A-Thon will work, click here. The first event is in just a few weeks!
Our goal is to raise $10,000 between two events. Planet Granite will match up to $10,000 of the funds raised so we have the opportunity to raise at least $20,000. Funds raised will be used by the ASCA to purchase new hardware for bolts and anchors. Come for the fun, the community and a good cause.

Thanks for all your work on this, Greg. And of course the donations by the sponsors.

Sometimes I forget that it takes a lot of donation $$ to pay for all the replacement bolts and hangers. Powers, Fixe, etc. do not donate that hardware, even though they provide a volume discount. When you have a guy like Roger Brown replacing over 330 bolts in a summer, the mass of hardware to support his efforts is huge! (I've tried to lift part of it... :-) ).

Yeah, Roger Brown is almost certainly the guy with the most bolts replaced next to Greg Barnes...

Clint has replaced a whole bunch as well...

Yep Clint, actually the costs on some of the gear - especially the rap hangers, single or double-ring, have gotten so high lately that we've had to cut back or stop ordering them. Around triple the cost compared to 5 or 6 years ago, and double for standard hangers. Dollar tanked, steel costs went up, shipping costs went up, etc.

Roger certainly replaces more bolts per year than anyone I know, and a couple more years he'll definitely top out the replaced-with-a-hand-drill category. I've probably done 2/3 of my 1600+ with a hand drill, and I don't know how many Kevin Powell did with what, but he'd tallied up around 1500 bolts replaced, and that was 10 years ago!

Bruce H must be way up there too!

t*r, that link is to sign up for the event, and then send info to friends who donate in your name. Planet Granite will match donations, but if you aren't going to the event it'd be better to wait and donate to a friend's Climb-a-thon page. If you don't know anyone who's going to participate, I'm not quite sure on how to work it. Let me get back to you on that!

"Details and goals of the event: A Climb-A-Thon is just like any other “A-Thon” fundraiser, except the participants will be climbing vertical feet to reach their goals! Participants can work in teams or individually. You set the goal and raise the money. Your friends and family who sponsor you can donate a flat fee, for example $20, or do a “per foot” climbed sponsorship. Every participant who raises $100 will receive a free ASCA t-shirt. There will also be other prizes and fun activities, such as prizes for the most vertical feet climbed. The event is followed by BBQ; beer for participants and their belayers."

No plans for socal - this is a Planet Granite idea to begin with, and they've done basically everything! Aside from some text & pics, and some bolt displays that I made, they've done it all, so that's at least 99% of the work setting this thing up. They wanted to help us out, and this way they can double their support, and have a fun event at a couple of their gyms too!

scuffy, tr, and anyone else who wants to have their donations matched but doesn't know anyone doing the Climb-a-thon - Planet Granite will match your donations if they are specifically earmarked for this event!

SO - if you'd like to donate and have your donation matched, you can:

And please email me that your donation is for the Planet Granite Climb-a-thon. You can also write a note on the check, or a note in the Paypal donation process. I will reply to your email so you can be sure I received it (it seems like a good number of emails disappear into the spam-filtering nether world...).

Though I plan to be geographically out of the loop by then, if perchance I did run into someone, say my partner from our, 'El cap in a day, in a gym (which was PGSF, oddly enough). event' - what's her name, how much might we raise, and what, really would that money go to?

Hey Jaybro - it would go towards buying more bolts & hangers - for instance, we've postponed buying more double-ring Fixe rap station hangers since they have gotten so expensive (higher steel prices, depressed dollar, higher shipping costs). We have also cut way back on pre-camo hangers (tan camo primarily), saving ones we already have for the places where they are required (JT, Red Rocks) - we could send more of them to places where they are nice but not required. Wholesale hanger prices (and european bolt prices) have at least doubled in the past few years, as anyone who buys them pro-deal knows.
