I am torn between:

"Nine large financial institutions have already agreed to participate in this program. They have agreed to sell preferred shares to the US government, on the same terms that will be available to a broad array of small and medium-sized banks and thrifts across the nation. These are healthy institutions, and they have taken this step for the good of the U.S. economy." - Henry Paulson, Oct 14. 2008

and the more famous
"I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms Lewinski." - William Jefferson Clinton, Jan. 26, 1998

"Read my lips..." was actually true when he said it. It did not become false until later.

I'll nominate Colin Powell, in front of the U.N., Feb. 6 2003:

"...The material I will present to you comes from a variety of sources. Some are U.S. sources. And some are those of other countries. Some of the sources are technical, such as intercepted telephone conversations and photos taken by satellites. Other sources are people who have risked their lives to let the world know what Saddam Hussein is really up to.

I cannot tell you everything that we know. But what I can share with you, when combined with what all of us have learned over the years, is deeply troubling.

What you will see is an accumulation of facts and disturbing patterns of behavior. The facts on Iraq's behavior demonstrate that Saddam Hussein and his regime have made no effort -- no effort -- to disarm as required by the international community.

Indeed, the facts and Iraq's behavior show that Saddam Hussein and his regime are concealing their efforts to produce more weapons of mass destruction... "

Powell's presentation is right up there with the greatest bloopers of the GWB presidency, but the question is: Was Powell outright lying, in spite of clear facts he was aware of to the contrary; or did he base his presentation on poorly researched intelligence, spun by an administration with a clear pro-war agenda?

I tend to lean towards the latter, and don't think his presentation was a true 'lie', but nonetheless Powell had some culpability in agreeing to be part of the process in the first place. It would be terribly naive to believe that Powell was a wide-eyed, innocent victim in that process.

One of the "healthy institutions", Merrill Lynch, lost $15 Billion in just the 4th quarter of 2008 and lost, pretax, $41 Billion for the year. Compare that with ExxonMobil's record after tax profit of $40 Billion in 2007.

Citigroup pretax loss $43 billion.

If you work hard, go to school, get a degree and do the right thing, you will get a good job and be able to live comfortably.

Or something "American Dreamish" like that.

That is a bigger pile of hooey than any story about Santa or the Easter Bunny.

I'm not saying that one shouldn't work hard, go to school and do the right thing - I just don't believe that doing so results in the outcomes we tell kids it will bring.

I say one should work hard and all of that - BUT it is no guarantee that bad things won't happen.

There are plenty of well-educated people who did the right thing that find themselves in bad situations too - abuse, bankrupt, on welfare, homeless. It is no guarantee of anything and we shouldn't tell kids that it is.

Not political.

I was buying my first new car and was being fed more lines than I could stand.
