The 'official' end of the midwinter holiday season is today, for all us northern folk - pagans, christians (all brands), agnostics, and even atheists. The sun has begun to return, and although it may seem hard to believe, soon it will be spring. We may even resume climbing, instead of just talking about it.

As a community service, I suggest that we have a diet challenge over the next while, with a new twist. (I haven't participated in previous events - saving myself, so to speak.) Medium Sooze has diligently coordinated the last few events, although the inability of some (e.g. those who live in Walnut Creek) to follow simple instructions must get annoying.

The proposal is that the diet challenge start on January 20th - inauguration day for those down south - and end on March 20th, the spring equinox. Perhaps with an intermediate weigh-in date? That allows enough time for a diet and exercise program to show some consistent benefits. However, the difference is that instead of the money going to those who lose most, it would be donated to a worthy cause. I suggest either the Yosemite Climbing Association, the Hillary Foundation, or the Central Asia Institute, but in any case a climbing-related charity/501(c)(3) of some sort. So those paying up at least get a tax receipt.

Central Asia Institute https://www.ikat.org/
Yosemite Climbing Association: http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org/
Hillary Foundation: http://www.thesiredmundhillaryfoundation.ca/

The "rules" for this bit of anarchy would be:
All on the honour system. You need not publicly say that you're participating, or how you're doing - but it's encouraged.
 Weigh-in January 20th.
One-month weigh-in February 20th (?). Must lose two kg (~ four pounds) by then, or pay $10 penalty.
 Final weigh-out March 20th.
Must lose five kg (~ ten pounds) by March 20th.
Must pay $10 for each kg (two pounds) you don't lose by March 20th.
 Sabotage of other contestants permitted.
Extreme, dangerous, and dishonest tactics prohibited.
Payments to be made as permitted by benefiting organization, and subject to checking.

As Sooze has suggested in the past, working on a percentage of body weight basis, or even BMI, might be desirable - but it gets very complex to administer. Let's keep it simple.

So is anyone interested?

I resemble that remark. Especially as for the last month, I've been doing a lot of weight training and power walking. That is, shovelling snow (two houses worth), and slogging through it.

Though it probably wouldn't harm me to trim down a bit - maybe not to triathlon weight, but some.

Sounds Great Mighty Hiker,

I personally think that to participate yo needs to tell it all on the Taco. It won't be much fun otherwise.

*How much you weigh
*How much you want to lose
*How you will conduct your diet strategy
*Why you want to lose the weight
*Pro to far out...but could post before and after pics.

We on the Taco could pick a participant and be their cheerleaders...encouraging them to victory.

Hey, this sounds fun...: DD Lynnie

What's weird Gene is for the first time in my entire life I need to maintain weight, not lose weight. Challenged myself April 2008 to learn/relearn climbing and to do so had to get in shape so I did.

But, I would love to be the cheer on person for those that want to make a life change in 2009. Will help in any way I can. Peace and Joy to 2009 for all on the Taco. :D LRL

TG, for me what ALWAYS worked BITD was ice tea with nada sugar and San Francisco sour dough bread made only with flour, salt and water. Seriously, 2 days of those and I'd drop a minimum of 5 pounds. Obviously not recommended for any type of long term weight loss.

To live life well one needs to develope a good life plan of eating, exercise, as well as the spiritual aspect of life on this planet. And then the whole important part of a life plan which encompasses your work, goals, fulfillment and relationships....IMHO....Peace and a Great New Year Taco Peeps. lrl

EDIT: Sorry, Mr. TG we be being too serious here. Know you're just jivin about popcorn and smokes...but pro would work well..Hehehe
If we took life more lightly we pro wouldn't eat so much and spend time crusin' outdoors which makes us all happier.

A SuperTopo Diet Challenge swimsuit issue strikes me as a less than great idea - though it may motivate some, it may discourage others. But intermediate weigh-ins, perhaps every two weeks, makes sense. It would allow (one hopes) positive reinforcement at reasonable intervals, track progress, plus reduce anomalous/contrived results. As there are two weeks to go until the suggested start-up date, there's time to sort out these details.

I don't like popcorn, and would never smoke, so can't take up Todd's idea. Sourdough and tea, or the blueberries and diet coke, also seem a bit dramatic and short-term. I'll think of something involving a little less eating, eating the right things, and exercise. In other words, something that might have lasting value.

It seems to me that most short-term or dramatic weight losses involve either sickness or dehydration, not 'real' loss.

As for shape, as Karl mentioned the other day, I am in shape. Oblate spheroid is a shape.
