Thanks for that Chris - it would be a better site because of it.

I'm all for slander, as long as we know who's slinging it...

thanks Chris, great suggestion....and sometimes I agree with hardman, slander can be humorous at times, but I guess the good general rule is NOT to slander or wrongly accuse others. Good rule in life. Russ can be hellarious at times..uh as long as I'm not the "victim".
Peace

Yeah, what THE MAN said. One name/user would also reduce the volume of off-topic and ad hominem posts.

I'm knott either but like Mighty Hiker I've got a pseudonym that seems to fool no one.
Regarding Chris' point in the OP, I could not agree more. Sock puppets are a bane of forums.

hey chris,
speaking of usernames, could you please change mine to t*r? that way i can keep my own posting history. i DON'T want to set up a new account but standing strong is the dumbest username ever plus it's like three years old. i've been trying to trade the beer i won from hardman knott in exchange for hardman knott's changing my username, but no dice. if you change it, he can just give the six pack of green labels to YOU!
cheers
t*r

Just to nitpick for a moment. The legal definition of libel is defamation that's printed - in writing. Slander is oral - spoken. You can defame someone on the internet. You can libel someone. But you probably can't slander someone, at least not on SuperTopo.
According to Black's Law Dictionary, and the Oxford English Dictionary.
The damages for libel are generally greater than for slander, as it tends to be more permanent, and have a wider audience. British and Canadian law with regard to libel and slander are more conservative than that of the U.S.A. You can say things in the U.S.A., especially about politicans and other public figures, that you'd never get away with here.
Ad hominem attacks are another matter. Where you have nothing intelligent or relevant to say about the issue being debated, but don't like the other person, so just say something obnoxious or rude about her/him. Too much of that around here.

I totally agree! Unfortunately it seems that Chris has to make this same reminder a few times each year. It is fine to disagree with someone, even strongly, but there is no need to act like a bunch of five year olds.
Cheers,
Doug

Chris,
I appreciate the fact that when the routine reminder becomes necessary, you always post it with restraint and maturity. Even though you have to do it again and again.
No getting around human nature so its appreciated when someone makes the best of it.

hey there chris... say, as always, it is surely nice to see you post here... your're like a good land-tilling gardner, tending to the field---doing your best to have a great crop...
since i first stepped in (due to finding my brothers name here) i have hoped to be one of the many path's through your "field-property" that would grow well, along side what you've started....
god bless, to you, chris... from what i've learned, it is a hard job to tend the fields at times...

Hey Standing Strong - ever heard of private e-mail?
As I suggested before, e-mail Chris and ask him. Better yet, pick a name and stick it.
BTW, thanks again for providing the image above. You do have the 6-pack of green labels
coming, and Russ has a beer I owe him from several months ago, and two for Nature from
several years ago. Incidentally, Nature is still holding $75.00 for last year's Sushi Fest,
as I told him to put towards a possible future event. So please try to relax in the meantime...
