During the corse of a 2 week road trip we had the pleasure of visiting Yellostone National Park. It's huge!! 3472 square miles, mostly in Wyoming at about 7,500 feet elevation. Unfortunately the only sunshine was on the 1st of four days so that's when I took most of the pictures. The rest of the time(June 9-13) it snowed, never getting above 39F.
There's lots of geothermal areas.
This cliff is wild. The base is large columnar basalt(like Devils Postpile) and the rest is small twisting ones all the way up. A lot of them fall off and the sign suggests that you don't stand there. I took the photo.
Massive cliffs and rivers everywhere.
Sorry for the lack of color.
Note the people on the right cliff by the river.
The trees on the canyon rim give you the scale;huge.
Wildlife. There's lots of it, but shooting it is a lot like shooting your climbing partner; lots of butt shots. I've got elk ass
Buffalo butt
Even bear butt
They never stop eating. They even eat while they poo. This one reminds me of Rod Stewart.
They stop to burp.
They stop to do yoga.
The buffalo are shedding their winter coat so they look kind of mangey. Sporting the buffulo soldier dreads.
Although they look slow and docile the sign states they get over 2,000 pounds and can run 30mph and shows a picture of a touron flying thru the air like this;

You can get pretty close.
Really, too close.
This one was ramming the tree when we arrived.
Scratching his neck.
Saw 3 bears. Their bear policy is different than the Valley. They instruct you to put food IN, yes IN your car. If a bear comes in or near a camp ground they "haze" it once then kill it if it comes back. "You'all too liberal out there in California" was the response I was given.
In 1988 burned for almost 3 months and consumed 800,000 acres before being extinguished by the snows of September 11th. It led to a reworking of the NPS fire management policy. There's evidence of fire all around.
The snow did make for a few good shots though.
If you haven't been there you should definitely go.

Wow! Those are some uber-fantastic shots! The geysers and hotsprings--Polychrome is the most colorful, I think--were really spectacular.
Of course, my favorites were the Butt Shots. Commentary made me laugh.
Thanks for awakening some great memories with these beautiful photos. I've been to Yellowstone several times...it's always different, always magnificent.

Nice pics. One of my co-workers who doesn't get out much thought it was all PhotoShopped. Had to convince him that places this beautiful really exist out there.
Not sure if I succeeded. . .

Every time I have been to Jellystone park it has snowed on me. It doesn't seem to matter what month.
Thanks for the great trip report and the awesome pictures.
Your friends comment reminds me of what the girl who cuts my hair says.

Growing up 60 miles North of YNP, I didn't ever appreciate all the wonderment that it offered. Thanks for the many faces of Yellowstone sans people.
I dig the Buffalo soldier part :-)
