Has anyone been to Lee Vinning Canyon yet this year? What are the conditions?

Knott to get in Yer grill WB, but when was the last time you ticked an ax in the great white? It's been so cold this week that I could wear my crampons in my driveway. Theres got to be something frozen in that silly little canyon.

translation: wait a few weeks for the eastside locals to climb before the cityfolk / yahoos arrive ;)

Not really

Two friends (east side locals) came over last week with their double boots and ice climbing gear on to go rock climbing because they were in the canyon that morning and there was no ice.

I'm a local if Big Pine counts. Someone should check on this. I know, I'll go. Expect a report on Sunday night. On the other hand, if someone has been there Saturday, and posts a bad report, I'll be in the Gorge.

The ice is fed largely by leaks in the comstock that feeds the hydro plant. Being a drought year, there may be minimal flow coming out of Ellery. So, it does not surprise me it may not be in condition yet.

Edited to add: The approach is heinous before the talus is covered with snow anyway

It's ready!!!! Chouinard is in. That was an awesome day Werner! I can't believe we were climbing with no shirts on! The day before we were shivering in our puffys ice climbing......

Even though June Mountain opens tomorrow, I'd be willing to skip that for some ice climbing. I don't have a partner lined up for tomorrow though. Any takers?

Just talked to someone that was there today. There's some climbable ice but not much. It's also wet. Werner's info was right on.

We went there in a drought year with what looked like an easy approach. A foot of snow covered the talus. Every step was a ankle twisting posthole f*#kfest. We got to the climbs and it started raining. Climbed anyways.

Ya gotta want it

after looking at kurt wedburgs recent photos, i have a feeling the bard/harrington will not form at all this year. in late november i hiked to the top of the climbing area and so no water running, whereas in the summer there was a veritable waterfall flowing. i recall the b/h wall "magically" appearing 4 years ago and now have feeling that whatever caused it's appearance has now been fixed. i truly hope that i am wrong for the ungodly crowding already apparent will only get worse...

Why I thought fixing whatever was fixed is what ice tools are for? Or maybe it takes a drill. ha

Went to the canyon today (Tuesday), the ice that is in is very wet/friable. I don't think a screw would hold after the first third of any line. Bard Harrington is completely dry. Also, there were many large sluffs on the north side of the canyon emptying into the narrows section. We also saw several on the southern side of the narrows. The trail in was pretty miserable with all the new snow.
