After a brief discussion of Lyle Lovett in another thread, I got my hands on some of his stuff and started listening. I'm not generally a country fan, but that guy has talent. Seems like there's a lot of different flavors here on the tacostand, musically and otherwise, so I'll bet there are is some real gold that I've never heard of before spinning in the iPods in tacoland. I love discovering new music, so I thought I'd open the floor for some music suggestions. Maybe one of your old favorites and a new discovery thats got you fired up.
One of my all time favorites is Johnny Cash. He's got a lot of good stuff, if you've been living in a closet for the past 70 years, check out "Live at Folsom". His last albums, the American Recording series, are fantastic as well. Been listening to "Unchained" recently.
Other than Lyle, the 'new' discovery has been "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah" who have a self-titled album thats a year or three old and a new album called "Some Loud Thunder". Very different but I find it to be some of the more creative stuff out there. Doesn't feel at all 'canned' in the mass-produced pop music sense.

Based on the above, it's obvious you'd be one to appreciate the Eddie Money thread.

Yup, the ole cuz (albiet branchkin cuz!) has a bit of talent...
Equally good (in my book) are The Clumsy Lovers, Jalan Crossland.
Along some different lines, how 'bout Cross Canadian Ragweed, The Pogues (always a winner!!), Acoustic Alchemy, The Rippingtons...
That's my $0.02.
I'm off to dust off my fiddle now; I'm actually quasi inspired to start playing again... We'll see!!

Cunninlinguists - Will Rap for Food.
amazing hip hop artists from the deep south, part of the new thread of cerebral/eclectic hip hop.
Or, try the sensational rapper/rocker/bluesman Mos Def - The New Danger...more eclectic w/ metal derivatives.
I just found out about the Ozric Tentacles - rich jazz w/ all kinds of ethnic and psychedelic inflections.

tori amos "tear in your hand"
holy jesus... this is one of the most ethereal songs i've heard in.my.life. the music takes my breath away and the lyrics are pretty original. like when she sings that she and charles manson like the same ice cream... altho i thought she said, 'your miracles mean choss to me'.
seriously, you have to check this song out... i just picked up "little earthquakes" after having not had it cuz it got lost... and i'm so glad i did.
and the live version of "path of thorns" on "mirrorball" by sarah mach is another one of those song by a pop artist you didn't expect to like that just take you away.

I burned a copy of Bryan Ferry's new one, Dylanesque, for a friend of mine who was blown away by it. The verdict: if it isn't awesome it's close.

I love the x-country station on my XM, though I never keep track of any of the bands I like or anything.
Nancy Atlas is still my #1 favorite! www.nancyatlas.com
I also like putting in, say for example, Ryan Adams into pandora.com and seeing what comes up.

I always thought Marvin Gaye's "Whats Going On" really nailed it as a whole album seamlessly tied together.
Recently got Pink Floyd's" Dark Side Of the Moon" Never listened to it much back in the day but what a sonic wonder,, even without the 'herbal enhancment'.

one day on NPR i heard the song "righteously" by lucinda williams. i found the single a few days later at a used record store - didn't have a whole album from her for some reason and i still havn't checked out more of her music but i'd like to.
the album "shoot out at the ok chinese restaraunt" by ramsay midwood on vanguard records is another freaken pretty great find. it was playing one day at the lee vining visitor's center and i got their last copy. very lucky! it's one of my all time favorite c.d.s. i especially love to listen to it while driving on 395.
he sounds like a cross between bob dylan and tom waits...
"music to play on the back porch as the sun goes down and the dead Chevy truck rusts its way back to the elements. ..."
