can't argue that. met this cute young woman who's been to tons and tons of Canadian and US NPs. She said Yosemite is by far the worst off of them all. Sad.

While you're waiting around for all that to happen you should try hiking out to Tehipite Valley. Or just go literally anywhere else in the Sierra Nevada. After a few summers of exploring you might even lose interest in "fixing" Yosemite.

And close the roads, too! Make all the wall climbers have to walk in to El Capitan. That'll go over big, huh?

great idea.. ( Knott ! )
Lets take all those people who wouldn't be able to hike into the valley, or even if they were able to, still wouldn't, yet want to see beautiful nature, and send them to all of the other parks that would still have roads.
And better yet, lets piss them off so that they don't want to support wild places, and lets turn those places over to the Trumps of the world who want to mine and drill those wild places into oblivion.
I don't have a problem with plumbing. Clean water reduces health problems.
Electricity.. don't have a problem with it if used wisely. I don't want street lights in Yosemite.
My solutions is a daily quota to reduce traffic. If you hike in, the quota doesn't apply to you. Hitchhike in if you want. Ride a bike, quota doesn't apply to you. But reduce the number of autos.
I would also increase public transportation.

It's stereotypical California, i.e. not Barstow -- what do you expect besides overpriced and overcrowded? The Sierra are still a pretty nice range if you avoid Yosemite, Whitney, and the JMT.

In the mid-1970s I participated along with a lot of others in the public input to the 1980 General management Plan (GMP ). Reduction in development and auto traffic was widely supported and has clearly not been achieved . I now think we should have proposed the return of the Yosemite Valley Railroad which ran from Merced to El Portal from 1907 to !945 & the removal of most permanent housing & facilities from the Valley to El Portal also among other things .

Once you get away from the Rushmore faces parking (which is at least more organized than it used to be plugged up with), it's not too bad. There's still some camping near the rocks and its kind of nice being able to walk up to climbs with a short approach. And the sport climping is silly, but fun.

I had strong feelings of disgust for the Valley after driving down from the Meadows a couple of summers ago. My first visit in probably a dozen years. The had one lane blocked off for buses and emergency vehicles (yeah right). Pissed me off so much I started a thread here to gripe about it, only to have a surprising number of climbers here voice support for that set up. I still think it's lame to create that kind of impact in the rare event some fat tourist chokes on his ham sandwich and needs evac, but that's just my opinion.
Having said that, the Valley is crowded because it is amazing. Unlike any other place on earth. That's why everyone's there. If you don't like it, go on the off season, or hold your nose to get there and then walk 5 minutes from the most crowded spot and you'll find yourself alone. Life is complicated and full of contradictions. So is the Valley.

Remove ALL humans from the park. That ought to take care of it.
