It's never too early...

Pitchers and Catchers report on Feb 13/14 for most teams. Full squads about a 5 days later.

For now, a great show just came out on MLB Network... Billy : the Billy Martin story. Lots of really good stuff about Billy, George, and the whole circus. Check it out.

Winter meetings are winding down... Stanton to the Yanks? Damn they got some sock now. Angels looking good even with Ohtani and his platelet infused elbow.

So far:
Monday
New York Yankees – Acquired OF Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins for INF Starlin Castro, INF Jose Devers and RHP Jorge Guzman.
Tampa Bay Rays – Acquired 2B Joey Wendle from the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Seattle Mariners – Claimed OF Caumeron Perkins off waivers from the Phillies.
St. Louis Cardinals – Signed free agent RHP Miles Mikolas.

Tuesday
Chicago Cubs – Signed free agents RHP Brandon Morrow and LHP Drew Smyly.
San Diego Padres – Acquired 3B Chase Headley and RHP Bryan Mitchell from the Yankees for OF Jabari Blash.
Rays – Acquired 2B Ryan Schimpf from the Padres for INF Deion Tansel.

Wednesday
Los Angeles Angels – Acquired 2B Ian Kinsler from the Detroit Tigers for RHP Wilkel Hernandez and OF Troy Montgomery.
Minnesota Twins – Signed free agent RHP Michael Pineda.
Seattle Mariners – Acquired RHP Shawn Armstrong from the Cleveland Indians for international slot money.
Miami Marlins – Released RHP Edinson Volquez.
Houston Astros – Signed free agent RHP Joe Smith.

Thursday
Oakland Athletics – Acquired RF Stephen Piscotty from the Cardinals for 2B Max Schrock and SS Yairo Munoz.
Texas Rangers – Signed free agents RHP Kevin Jepsen, 3B Hanser Alberto.
Cardinals – Acquired Marcell Ozuna from the Marins for RHP Sandy Alcantara, OF Magneuris Sierra, RHP Zac Gallen and LHP Daniel Castano. Signed free agent RHP Luke Gregerson.

Anyone got any bets they want to place? I could be a gamer.

Go Cubs!!!!

WS brew knocked it dead! Killed off a couple kegs... but have 6 still remaining of various brews...

Giants would have been a lot better with Stanton... They'll be ok if they can fill couple spots. Oakland will probably still stink. Cubs will be good but Dodgers will be better...

Early prediction: Cubs and Yanks World Series. Red Sox close, Dodgers choke. Houston will have the WS hangover. Angels will make a run but fail again in Sept. Washington...pfffft, no winning culture there.

I thought about starting an Ohtani thread awhile ago but that all fizzled out pretty quickly. Bummed he didn't decide on Seattle, but as our GM said, "hey, he's a 23 year old kid, who can figure out what a 23 year old kid is going to want? Maybe he really liked the Angel's uniforms" My bet is that his "two-way" days will be short lived, its just too complicated from a 25 man roster, 5 man rotation standpoint if he get's dinged up while batting or playing the field.

The biggest question that remains now is, where is Ichiro going to play this year?

Lot of NL sentiment here....unfortunately the light is shining brightest for the AL. They won the Interleague series AGAIN last year and the WS and now Ohtani and Stanton will reside there.
Go Angels!
One can never forget the Dodgers sneaking out of Brooklyn like thieves in the night.

The Angels say they need a six man rotation for Ohtani. They'll have six starters for sure...on the DL! As usual. Ohtani will be on the DL come June.

They signed a washed up Kinsler. That's exciting.

Ohtani is on the DL right now it sounds like...

Z is right... his two way play will be short lived. I just don't see it.

Just announced: #Dodgers get Matt Kemp from #Braves for Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy, Charlie Culberson and cash.
11:37 AM - Dec 16, 2017//

Wow! McCarthy and Culberson were ok... glad that other deadwood is gone, but for Matt Kemp???

#SalaryDump

*to add: Gonzalez was immediately designated for assignment by the Braves

The deal: (from TrueBlueLA.com) Gonzalez, as someone with more than 10 years of major league experience and five with the same team, had a no-trade clause that he had to waive for the deal to go through. His reward for waiving the no-trade clause was eventual free agency, as Gonzalez was designated for assignment by Atlanta.

A similar fate could await Kemp, but we’ll see in the coming days or weeks.

This deal, more than anything, was about lessening the Dodgers’ luxury tax burden for 2018. The competitive balance tax measures payroll by average annual value so for next year here’s what the Dodgers were able to do:

Shed:
Gonzalez ($22 million)
Kazmir (~$15 million)
McCarthy ($12 million)

Take on:
Kemp ($16.5 million; $20 million AAV minus the $3.5 million they were already paying)
Cash to Braves ($4.5 million)

That lops roughly $28 million off the Dodgers’ luxury tax number for 2018, which in November we estimated to be about $204 million. That puts the Dodgers under the $197 million tax threshold with some room to maneuver without going over.

Seriously? Didn't know he was still alive.
Is this one of those vaunted 'analytics' decisions?
Good riddance to all those guys except Culberson. He has potential.

Sounds like they will flip Kemp for some pitching... no way they are keeping that slug in the outfield

Didn't think of that. Dodgers need outfielders like they need a hole
in their collective head.

Giants get Longoria from Rays
The Giants have acquired third baseman Evan Longoria from the Rays, a source told MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi. In return, Tampa Bay is receiving San Francisco's No. 1-ranked prospect, shortstop Christian Arroyo, outfielder Denard Span and pitchers Matt Krook (No. 25) and Stephen Woods (No. 29), according to Yahoo! Sports.

Closer Zach Britton ruptures achilles during workout... sorry Baltimore, out 6 months +

Tim Lincecum working on comeback, and is yoked!!

When it comes to the West Coast, think Angels......although it will be Houston with the repeat. Dodgers peaked last season and the Giants are on a downward spiral.

Yeah, I know. It's the minor leagues, but these guys play big and always come through at the plate.

The young fella got called up to AAA last season, but it was apparent he still needed to work on the basics. He was sent back down to Trenton.

It looks like Rookie's dad has moved on and the young fella will have to improve his game without dads guidance.

It's likely Sr. and Jr. are having a catch right now, waiting for April, so they can watch the youngest show what he's got.

Cubs need to add to their bullpen and hope they pan out. And Baez needs to start hitting.

And Baez needs to start hitting.

True dat... he has to cut down on the strikeouts or hit more bombs... pick one. I'd like to see him at around 20 bombs, 200 hits, and a .315 avg.

Mets grab Jay Bruce... 3 years for 39 large.

Starlin Castro wants traded out of Florida before he ever plays a game there!! He was part of the Giancarlo Stanton trade.

Giants still looking at McCutcheon from Pirates. Maybe moreso now that Bruce has been snagged. They need an outfielder bad.

Darvish is shopping his wares all over the place. One place I don't think he will end up is back in LA.

Agent Jason Wood was fired for secretly filming players in the shower. I wonder if he has any vid of Bartolo Colon... I'd watch that for science.

Yankees looking at Manny Machado...

Rafael Palmeiro still thinks he has it at 53 and is shopping vid of him in the batting cage... ain't the juice grand?

Josh Donaldson re-signs with Blue Jays for 1 year @23million. wow!

Charlie Blackmon re-signs with the Rockies for 1 year @14million

Jose Bautista will hopefully be pushing a broom in a Walmart

Puig for Jackie Bradley Jr in Sox land??? Red Sox still looking at JD Martinez for some power.

Good column in LA Times today by Bill Plaschke on why the Dodgers should let Yu walk.
I tend to agree that he is a head case and has lost his mojo. I definitely agree he isn’t worth
$100 million for 5 years. Everybody talks about his ‘stuff’ but his numbers do not overwhelm.
Knowing the Dodgers they’ll re-sign him for $120 for 4 years.
