Its got 3,610 posts and is still going strong. I check in on it here and there and have no idea what its all about. Feels like walking into the wrong ballroom at a hotel. I'm kinda like, "whoah, what's going on in here?" then I'm like, "maybe I don't belong here" then I'm kinda like "well maybe I'll sit here and stare at the people for a while but I'll keep my mouth shut."
Anybody care to tell me what's going on in there? What is a Flame? Who are the Flames? What is the commonality in the thread? How do I contribute? Its like coming in halfway through Mulholland Drive and feeling confused and intrigued and scared and curious all at once.
It seems to be a rambling hot mess of poetry, bluegrass, gnomes, jazz, sunsets, beatnik thought, cats, ponies and even a little climbing.
Please splain the madness to me!
"this thread has padded walls
we the underdogs.
i like to come in here
and throw myself sideways
it'z a silent tragedy.
i don't make no drama
as my doom unfolds in my lap.
no wheezing as i fight for life,
only a blue-lipped half smile."

I think Mouse told me once that the Flames thread was the place he could post as much as he wanted and not annoy anyone. But I could be hallucinating that memory.
Now the "What is Mind" thread I find very valuable. Because whenever I see it come up I feel my mind go pleasingly blank, despite never looking at it. I think I may have one post on it at the very beginning, but I could be imagining that too.

It's Mouse from Merced's opus.
When he's gone, we will be able to find something of him there.
Also, it is simply ... Mouse's longform version of "Kilroy Was Here".
http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilroy_was_here
Ostensibly, the thread is a free association whose leaping off point is a group of buddies from Merced, the self-styled "Flames".
Some of them, such as Jeff Mathis, a.k.a. "The Rev." and Mouse, actually climbed.
But, be thinking more along the lines of cultural reservoir.
Think selfie stick ... But instead of being pointed at a man's head, it's pointed inside a man's head.

Hahahah! I've almost started this same thread several times but I decided to just be the guy who laughed at the joke without getting it instead of having the guts to ask someone to explain it to me.
I'm still not sure I get it, but there is some help in here...

Got news for ya.
It's not about "nothing."
Nothing could be further from the truth.
It is what it is.
Take or leave.
Give and receive.
My blessings on all who participate.
My condolences to all who fail to realize, "Flames abide."

An exploration of the tangents of life from various viewpoints.
The mind thread on the other hand is an ego thing about who gets to be the smartest.

Of Flames Here Now
Like horseradishes
And what you eat
Warms your heart
Or burns your seat
And love affairs
That cannot be
Be cautious of
The flames you see
A favorite room
And hearth to set
My weary bones
Would rest not yet
But to my dogs
I always say
My magic ways
Will end some day
They marvel as
I plant a kiss
Upon their heads
For now there's this

It's a thread
for Middle Earth locals
who find meaning in many places.
While some other threads are
filled with egoistic blathering
of no consequence.
Flames drop cowbells
and fascist killing riffs.
