Bold thieves steal hiker's keys, drive cross state to burglarize him

By Matt Markovich Published: Sep 5, 2014 at 8:00 PM PDT Last Updated: Sep 5, 2014 at 9:55 PM PDT

SEATTLE -- After spending six days backpacking in the North Cascades near Hannagan Pass, a West Seattle couple returned to the parking lot at the trail head to find their red Volvo had been burglarized, along with three other cars.

The thieves took everything of value, but they didn't stop there.

"They took my clothes, my fiance's cellphone, which was under the floor mat, they even took the floor mats," said Adam Cox.

The thieves also took the car registration -- which had Cox's West Seattle address on it -- and they found his house keys stashed in the car.

"When I saw that, my fiancé said they were probably going to the house," said Cox.

But their home was a four-hour drive away. The thieves has also cut and removed the cord connecting the battery to their car. Cox and his fiancé, Michelle Drisscol, called for help and eventually made it back home. As soon as they walked in they realized the thieves had already been there.

They took everything of value inside the house, including backpacking, hiking, and fishing gear, a computer monitor, DVD player, clothing, a diamond ring, and Cox's brand new 2014 Black Marin Lombard Cyclocross bicycle.

"Most of my favorite things were taken," said Cox.

When he looked out his back window, he realized they had also taken is 1997 Nissan Pathfinder that had a dead battery.

Cox found his dead battery where the Pathfinder was parked and assumed the thieves had time to install a new one before stealing the SUV. He says neighbors may have seen the thieves trying to jump start the Pathfinder.

But it was the discovery in his bedroom that make Cox believe the same people who burglarized his car targeted his home.

"My house keys that were there at the trail head that were in my center console, I found in my bedroom linked together thrown on the floor," said Cox. "That's the proof that it had to be the same guys."

Wow. We had a string of car break-ins at the Gunks this year, which initially seemed to be the opposite of this case. Window broken, something small taken, wallets apparently not found. On the presumption that the would-be thieves were disturbed in the act, nobody thought to cancel their credit cards. The thieves had taken card numbers, driving license details, etc. etc...

i have been taking my reg and anything with my address with me for years-heard about this kind of burglary from some crusty old sfpd sergeant-also he said to never leave your garage door opener in the car if you're not there...

There are thieves who break into your home, car, etc. when they know that you are not there. They should be beaten to within an inch of their lives. Then there are the ones who enter your home knowing you are there. Typically these bastards are armed and want you to tell them where the valuables are, the combination to the safe, etc. If they try that on me I hope I am quick enough to blow the first one in half with double OO in the 12 gauge. The rest get the pleasure of the .357.

Of course if they turn tail and run it's illegal to shoot them. I totally get that. They shouldn't be too hard to ID on the surveillance cameras.

The other day I had a guy in a van stop me by my driveway asking me where I got the "This premise under video surveillance" signs, as if they were fake. I said they came with the cameras. He drove away.

Lotta Aholes out there.

That's one reason why I keep my auto registration and insurance
card in my wallet. . . not in the car. . .

TFPU!

I was just thinking about this very scenario the other day, since I have been parking my truck outside and realized I need to bring my garage door opener in with me instead of leaving it in the truck.

last big roadtrip with a lot of gear in the truck, I left a pair of worn tighty-whitey undertrousers just visible in the front compartment. not exactly an appealing target.

then I realized that carrying around a pair of my old man's whitey tighteys is not exactly appealing to me.

What do you Yanx do to keep thieves at bay?

I hesitate to blow my cover but I have a motion sensor in the vehicle hooked
up to a tape deck so that if someone breaks in they're gonna hear a high def
recording of a rattlesnake buzzing from a couple of speakers so they won't
be able to localize it. It even scares me.

the only time I have had a car broken into was in Canada, we had headed up to the French Generals for a week and came back to find the glove box broken, fortunately they didn't think the gear we left in the car was worth taking.

no wallets there in... fortunately...

that was in the early 1990s.

I've been lucky otherwise, I guess...

For my part, I'm astonished that someone hasn't done a stake-out of these monsters in one of these parking lots.

We did that at Stoney Point a long Time ago. Surprise a few of those f*ckers with a bat and the word gets around...

Mike Hoover used to leave his poisonous snake permit in the little window of his front door, and when he moved into the Eagle Rock house the first thing he did was get up on the back roof and shot two 30/06 rounds into the back lawn "I just wanted all my neighbors to know that f-;^er is crazy, now I won't have any problems"

a good friend had a perfectly dialed complete rack with cord stolen after he set it down on the back step, just to go back inside for 45 seconds, GONE....

i had a whole shop cleaned out, who loses 40K worth of gear???
Thank the North Hollywood Boyz, they were getting access to tag freeway overpasses.

weird, what i miss most, was stolen from the car, a Marmot Warm II parka.. i went to pay for gas and when i got back, Gone.. don't leave it unlocked at all.

I have been lucky, but I drive beaters usually. I keep my registration and proof of insurance on my phone, I think I will hide the paper copy in my trunk. come to think of it, I only have a PO box listed on my registration.

I am amazed by the number of people who keep credit cards in their vehicle console.

We had gear thieves at the Leap a few years back. Not so much lately. Everyone knows who it was. A local junkie from Kyburz. He wasnt a climber but he sold alot of gear. The as#@&%e would hang out in the bar at the lodge. He would camp in his vehicle and hit peoples cars while they were on routes. He went to jail for other stuff I think. I had my cargo container robbed by tennants' Norteno friends. We know who. All my Grandmothers cedar furniture, my Dads paintings, gutars, huge (5-7lb) crystals, glassware from my old lab, my Doctoral thesis notes and data, everything. I could go to war with the gang and get my sh#t back. Cops are no help. If they thought I was coming for paybacks, the cops would be guarding them. See my post about pit bulls. I got three left.

I have a jeep with a soft top, gets broken into all the time when I park at trailheads. Unfortunately I think the perps in these high crime areas are the same people we meet on the trails.

I onetime saw a friends distinctive Saab at a trailhead in L-worth Washington and proceeded to fill it up with boulders. Good sized ones. I was strong (not too smart). Filled it up to the bottom of the windows.

Saw the person a month later in Seattle and asked him how he was and if he'd had anything happen lately. Turns out he hadn't been to Leavenworth in months......

That totally blows Dwain. Meh..

First month we were in our new place some random small stuff got stolen out of the yard. We erected a full perimeter fence so the shady neighbors can't scope out the yard , and all the ladders that are stored outside are locked together with a massive cable.

Trailhead breakins- Both at Malibu Creek and Stoney Pt... I never keep anything in the car and just leave the doors unlocked . Twice I've come back to my unmolested vehicle when the cars parked on either side had smashed windows.

One friend of mine has a small camper sort of like these, except all metal. The door is a security door with redundant locks. The windows are all covered with metal security grid & blackout shades.

the little window of his front door

Been a while since I thought of those. So good for regulating air, and so easy to break into if you absent mindedly locked it with your keys in the ignition. Oh wait...
