I certainly don't agree with everything they say, hell I don't even agree with everything I say, but I respect people that post here without concealing their identity. Some may use pen names but still are open as to who they really are.

Climbing is an activity where candor is crucial. Can those who play silly games really expect to get respect.
Too bad there isn't a "masks off" section of the forum where it says "Poseurs Keep Out".

Am I alone in this?

I agree amigo, I am very new to this forum stuff, but it seems strange to know there are probably some old pals of mine posting here with pseudonyms unknown to me.

I figure it is just some internet style thing that I "don't get".

Good discussion, Ron!

I only started to look at on-line forums a few months ago. I contribute to a few Canadian forums, mostly on behalf of a climbers' access group. Sometimes under my own name, but even then mostly fairly factual stuff.

SuperTopo is really the only site I view and contribute to recreationally. The reasons include interest in (some of) the threads, interest generally in SuperTopia, and that a fair amount of the discussion is informative and/or amusing. Another is that many ST posters post under their own names, or thinly veiled pseudonyms. Some of whom are climbers of some stature. It makes the forums more credible, and tends to moderate some discussion.

There are good reasons why some people need to post under assumed identities - mostly plausible deniability. No way around that, in our interconnected world. For work or personal or family reasons, some people can't be seen to be posting under their own names.

Posting under an entirely invented name does allow considerable freedom. Unfortunately, it doesn't mandate parallel responsibility. Would these people post as much, or in the same manner, if they had to do so under their own names?

Not knowing any better, I started on ST under my proper name. After a week or two, I decided to adopt a pen name, and Chris Mc got it changed. Actually, it's a nickname given to me when I was in scouts - because I was anything but. Adolescent male humour at its best. Few know me by that nickname, but its the best I could do. For postings that are at all substantial, I still add my given name at the end. Not many climbers in North America have that name. None that I've met.

For the occasional silly posting, I don't add my name, or invent something goofy for the occasion.

Climbing is ultimately about being completely responsible for yourself, in debate and discussion also.

People could be more careful about the noms de plume they adopt (if they must), and the way they spin other people's names.

I hear you Mater Peefield, but I could have sworn your name was spelled different. I think its my mild perverted dylsexia settin in. But I gets your point totally.

Seems like ya gots to take things with a grain of salt when poseurs post stuff and you dont know who they are. Oh well.

Now I always thought Ron was kind of Nuts sometimes (takes one to know one huh?). But I cants blame him for not using "Nuts Ron". Personally, I think Piton works better than biner, bigbro or Roper Ron. Well, Roper Ron is kind of catchy dontcha think?

And Ouch! I do like his cartoons sometimes.

Now werner. Who is that anyway? Hes jus some ole dude I used to read about in the mags. I like to think that its goood karma to keep sumone who rescues folks hospitible towards me. Butt, sometimes makes me feel like I am on a spiritual quest tryin to figger out his stuff. Creepy place to be, I hope that dont mean nuttin...

Ouch is A number 1 with me.

Without Sam's art this place would be much less appealing.

lol, well I agree with some of your statement anyway ron.

BTW, I was looking over some old shots and I came up with this. (I will remove it if you dont want it here)

This is photographic evidence that piton ron is (was?) real,
does not climb with guns (at least not on his harness),
does not drill every time he climbs,
and can actually have fun sometimes.

edit: a fun SUSTAINABLE climb too. And sorry, no Ouchwork done....

Those two faced lying cheat bastards at Snow Canyon made that route, Trouble No More, off limits most of the year, but I did it again last year with Donini, Tucker, and (Sarah) Clifford.
For decades they let boy scouts vandalize the base, but now they're protecting endangered feces.
This time the person who pulled the rappel ropes after the 45m free rappel made sure there was no knot to jam in the rappel chain....

I remember making an 8mm video of (Mike) Clifford leading that pitch and dubbing over George Thoroughgood's "I Drink Alone".

He never talked to me again.
