As many of you know, the SuperTopo site has been under a siege by an individual from New Zealand named Matthew Gilchrist.

Thank you for your many reports of abuse by this individual.

At the present time, we have been playing an on-going whack-a-mole game with Mr. Gilchrist. We been unsuccessful in blocking his repeated violations of our posting policy despite a growing body of custom code to detect and block his posts. Our efforts slow him down, until he figures out a work-around.

At this time, we believe his abuse has become a form of criminal harrassment of our site, our business, and our community members.

We are proceeding with filing criminal charges with the FBI in hopes that they may be able to help us stop his on-going assaults.

While he may be out of the FBI jurisdiction in New Zealand, we would hope that this criminal activity will be an issue for him should he attempt to travel to the US.

If any of you have personal information on Matthew Gilchrist including his personal address, phone number, or other information that might be helpful for the FBI's investigation, can you please email it to us at:
forumabuse (at) supertopo.com

Thanks for your help.

I was not aware of this problem, until I opened one of his subtly worded threads at work the other day (hoping it was about climbing)and a close up of an anus appeared across my two monitors!
Thankfully nobody was behind me like my boss!

Have you tried emailing or having any dialogue whatsoever with him from the first time he was banned until now?

Edit-

Never really pictured Matt to be the "work around custom code" computer hacker type. Is it possible that all he needs to do to work around the custom code is make a new account with a new email address?

Cause the custom code doesn't seem to really do anything.

I doubt any of us not versed in the law would be much help but whatever it
takes to keep that creep out of the US would be a job well done. I also
doubt the FBI will be falling over itself to help and since my cousin who
was Assistant Director retired I can't help you there. ;-)

Didn't take long to get that Facebook beta, did it? Interesting that some people know exactly where to find it, and post it up in a snap.

No advice, but best of luck in whacking this mole, once and for all. Stalking bullshit behavior like this needs to be tracked down and whacked hard.

I assume the FBI will get in contact with Interpol and the New Zealand authorities will have to deal with him as well?

Filing charges with the FBI seems overly heavy-handed to me.

JMO, but.. I agree with the actions of the Moderators.

I'll bet a drone-launched Hellfire could locate him.

Get enough signatures on the White House petition, and Obama will have to think about it.

Don't worry the FTI(Forum Taco Investigation) is on the case working hand in hand with the FBI.

A good way to help would be to get some sort of shield prepared or cue up a few other websites for this afternoon when the sun comes up down under. Maybe even try and go out climbing?

I hear there is a massive high pressure system of dick & balls & tranny bumhole smashing into the west coast as soon as Matt cracks the new code once he gets home from his intellectual career of lifting heavy rocks this afternoon, that is if the FBI don't get to him first.

I wish all authorities luck, technological code cracking geniuses such as Matt can make slippery foe.

It can be very difficult to block an individual from a website/forum. Banning a username is never enough. Often banning a user by IP will work but there are things that can be used to avoid IP bans. Your best solution (and most practical) is to ban any usernames associated with the individual and then change the registration process. Require that all memberships be approved by an admin. It may be useful to include a simple question that climbers would know, such as "What company manufactures Camalots?" This will keep off all the random spambots we have seen.

You may be able to see the IP addresses, or at least country of origin, of all prospective members. Because New Zealand is not a well-represented country on this forum it would be simple to identify the user in question. Such a registration process would also make it such that the user could not simply continue immediately with such postings after receiving a ban.

Another option would be to include a rating system for posts, where any post that gets enough downvotes is automatically hidden.

If a new user (<1 month) is flagged by say 3 other users for objectionable content they are deactivated, and must go to the mods for reactivation.

Are there LAWS against this type of thing???.
Definitely in Europe.
not so much in the US

New Zealand only went after kim dotcom when the commercial cost became big:
In January 2012, the New Zealand Police placed him in custody in response to US charges of criminal copyright infringement in relation to his Megaupload website. Dotcom was accused of costing the entertainment industry $500 million through pirated content uploaded to his file-sharing site, which had 150 million registered users.

Fortunately enough I've missed nearly all of the Matt nonsense.
Guess I don't spend enough time here.
