A Jagger/ Richards masterpiece.
It stands the test of time.

Anybody catch that irish singer's version on the season closer of Sons Of Anarchy that Katy Sagal sang backup on?

Yeah, a storm is threatening
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Lord, I'm gonna fade away

War, children, yeah, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, yeah, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away, hey, yeah

Oh, see the fire is sweepin'
At our very streets today
Burnin' like a red coal carpet
A mad bull lost its way

War, children, yeah, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, yeah, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away, hey, yeah

Rape, murder, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Yeah, a storm is threatening
My very life today
A gimme, a gimme shelter
Or I'm gonna fade away

War, children, yeah, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, yeah, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

It's just a shot away, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away, shot away, shot away
It's just a shot away, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away, shot away, shot away

I tell love, sister, yeah, it's just a kiss away
I tell love, sister, yeah, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away, it's just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away

It's just a kiss away, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away, it's just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away, kiss away, kiss away

Gimme shelter, yeah, gimme shelter,yeah
Gimme shelter, yeah, gimme shelter
Gimme shelter, gimme shelter

Check the documentary "Twenty feet from Stardom" about the back-up singers on so many of the records of the 60s,70,and 80s. This song is featured in the story...

"Sticky Fingers" is pretty good too!

I was fortunate enough to attend a Halloween concert in Telluride where Anders Osborne and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe performed the album note for note . . . a really excellent adventure and outstanding show. The naughty nurse in the latex skirt was pretty awesome too.

I thought Gimme Shelter was the name of an Alex Lowe testpiece in the Canadian Rockies.

This brought me out of long-time lurk status for a first post.

Hudon wrote:"It's one of my all time favorite songs."

I attended a Mark Hudon slide show fall of 1980 or '81 at Sac. State (a double bill with Peter Minks-great show) and he used this song at the end of the presentation with just a bunch of random awesome climbing shots. As an 18 or 19 year old kid, it created quite a stoke. To this day, whenever I hear this song on the radio (unfortunately, it is the oldies station these days,)the hands get itching and I think of climbing--Can't help it, it became a Pavlovian condition for me. Thanks to the 'Stones for a great tune and thanks Mark for, um, over 3 decades of itching hands.

Thanks Ron. I had no idea what they were saying lo these forty some years. At least I had the feelings right.... Terrific and still full-powered. God that was a bastard time, a bastard decade, the Sixties.

Jim: that is the best by far, the live version. Got it on cue now.

I had this in 8-track and would play it all the time in my VW van back then in my peak years. It was one of several battle cries.

Wikipedia says:

"Gimme Shelter" is a song by the English rock band The Rolling Stones. It first appeared as the opening track on the band's 1969 album Let It Bleed. Although the first word was spelled "Gimmie" on that album, subsequent recordings by the band and other musicians have made "Gimme" the customary spelling. The Rolling Stones first played the song live at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO on 7 November 1969. Greil Marcus, writing in Rolling Stone, once said of it, "The Stones have never done anything better."[1]

I tried to repost the one I accidently deleted and now I can't get it to link from liveleak. It shows a little more concert footage with a closeup of a Helly freaking out on something heavy...I have experienced the energy in that type of situation quite a few times and it is palpable and frightening.

edit; it was actually a fan that was freaking out on stage... I saw the Levi jacket and thought he was a prospect
