Seems like an unconsciousness climber was on the 6th pitch of the east butt (lead fall?? Rock fall??) when I left the meadow they were about to send up a rescue helicopter. Anyone have more details??

I stopped and met Tom and got a little info. He said probable rock fall on the climber. They were still organizing the body recovery when I left him to cataloging the grim scene.

Oh no Tom!
Terrible news. Very tough season this year. I hope you have some friends to hang out with tonight. Surely didn't need this again.

Condolences to the climbers family. This is definitely NOT the news I wanna hear. I'll be on the captain in a week or so...a little stressed with two deaths up there from rockfall...thanks YOSAR for all you do.

Condolences to friends and family of the deceased.
I just did that route a week ago. I never flinched at some potential rockfall. I did however see a decent size block off to my left marked with an "X" and was obviously loose on that pitch.

At times like this Tom gets pulled into the investigation due to his volunteer status and unparallelled ability to document. Thus comes under the whole NPS protocol and that makes it difficult comment publicly without authorization. At least thats what it sounded like last time.

No he doesn't.
In a nutshell,
The leader somehow knocked off a loose block and the block hit his belayer.
The belayer died from his injuries .....

Ok perhaps I overstated his officialness due to misunderstanding what he told me, but they do ask him to do a fair bit of documentation and use his equipment. Not sure he gets paid during these things but I thought he was under YOSAR last time.

thanks for chiming in, Werner.
from the bridge it sounded like the leader was being given instructions to go back to the anchor, which now makes sense...
it's been a grim week in the valley... condolescences to all involved
