I think this is the oldest piton I have ever seen. Show me something older.

Ken

p.s. It was found in the Alps, guess by who?

Buncha old stuff from various routes around the world:

Below: A piton placed during the first ascent of the North Tower of Shiprock (Pre-Brower main tower ascent). Walt Shipley and I climbed the trio of Shiprock Towers and this one fell out of the Ormes Rib while Walt was leading the bold free ascent of the pitch with no hammer or pins:

This piton was placed on Shiprock in 1937 (shown in the hanging "Walt Memorial"--we found the Javelina skull during a FA in Sedona.)

I bootied a rusty pin on South Seas (cleaned easily), and I stuck it with my rack because it's in good shape other then the rust.

Now all my other pins are rusty too! :~

Couple older pins:

Friend bootied these from the Sierra years ago. Claimed they were Eichorn's. Dunno. Look very home made. One's a hook, methinks!

Longware bong:

Old Coonyard. Can anyone date this one?

Deuce,

Nice pics. I miss that guy.

Blitzo,

I did not find the piton. It was someone else that everybody has heard of.

this close-up is the only photo i have hosted right now. i'll try and get a shot of the whole thing.

says it's made in austria on it. i found it in big cottonwood canyon about ten years ago while scrambling up storm mountain island trying to get a toprope on a short 5.9+ crack. it was just sticking out of a dirty crack and i pulled it out with my hands. i can't believe no one found it, it had to have been there for decades.

Does anyone want to venture a guess as to who found the piton?

Mike,

That really narrows down the field. You get an A for effort and having the guts to venture a guess. Alps was and is a clue. I know this piton was never used in Yosemite and I know it was used prior to a piton ever having been placed in Yosemite. Check out how pitted the piton is and how large and thin the ring is. The person that found it considered it to be one of their most prized booty scores of their lifetime.

Ken

P.S. Most all of you know who found it.

wild guess: piton "recovered" near the Elbe, south of Dresden. Probably placed circa 1914 by a visiting American climber whose name escapes me. Probably recovered by Hot Henry Barber in a mid 1970s visit.

Just guessing. I was once one of 7 hanging off of a similar piton at a belay in this area.

All of those pins looked bomber. I mean, I'd do 'em... I mean use 'em. I mean... Cams are cool.

Here's an old toucan-like beak I found high on Sea Of Dreams in June 2006

I believe it may be an old prototype. It's pretty stout, more like the thickness of a Bugaboo than most beak like devices offered currently.
