Please help Hawaii. We have few areas of quality rock climbing with Mokuleia being our most pristine. Last month, the State has closed access to the area indefinitely after one unfortunate incident. The wall, 50+ routes and trail are all well maintained. Below is a link petitioning Department of Land and Natural Resources. Please read for further information and sign. Seriously the DLNR is out of control. A group of unelected state employees that has restricted our freedom over and over again. Try owning a boat here, they make it as difficult as they can, and now they close this trail....I have half a mind to build another...come in from east or west and traverse over.
Rockfall is nothing new to this fractured Island. It's very sad what happened to this young girl.

It's really too bad the girl was injured. I'm happy she's alive and I hope she makes a full recovery. It seems like a 30 pound rock would have killed her so there might be some exaggeration there, but it doesn't change the fact that a falling rock put her in the hospital. The article is a little vague but I'm assuming that climbers knocked the rock down on her by accident?
Trying to get Hawaiian bureaucrats to get anything done is like herding really lackadaisical cats BTW. I'm surprised they were so quick to pull the trigger closing an entire area.

It's really unfortunate what happened to this girl, but it's one of the risks of the sport. Unavoidable.
However, Hawaii is one of the most liberal states in the union, you all voted for these people or the people who put these clowns in office and continue to do so bringing wasteful bureaucracies, regulations and un needed taxes all in the hopes of some big government utopia that's going to fix all your problems. Well they fixed the problem didn't they.

In addition to posting a form Petition (from a site some may not wish to use), it would be advisable (and far more effective) if you were to also provide direct contact (email and/or physical address) where people can send their own comments.
Petitions, even when signed by many people, are never given the same weight as individual communications.

I climbed there on my honeymoon. Nice spot. Gear stash at the base free to use, not just rescue gear. and I think the string through the toprope anchors is frikkin brilliant. Shame about the kid getting brained. Hope she recovers. Watch out for falling rocks indeed.

I'm sad to here about the accident and wish the girl a full and swift recovery.
I also signed the petition and hope we can gain access to the climbs again.
I am not keen on change.org and hope their spam doesn't start up again.
As a Hawaii resident I will gladly send a personal e-mail to DLNR asking them to reconsider their decision. Hawaii has many sketchy hikes that traverse loose lava formations.I imagine this is probably not the first accident on record involving a falling rock be it natural or caused by another person.

Very true the rock here is fractured and thats the reason for the strings going to the TR anchors. It would be too sketchy to have people hiking up there settings anchors so the strings are a decent compromise. Anytime your there it's heads up and this has been the case for decades. The unelected dlnr"s answer to everything is just close it. Close sacred falls, close the sandbar, close stairway to heaven, close Moke, they are pitiful! My huge thanks to all who have signed or email this disfunctinal organization who rules over our island life.

That really is unfortunate. For the accident (obviously), and the closure.
It seems people get pretty badly hurt, killed, and lost on many of the trails on Oahu...I'm glad they haven't closed all of them. Not trying to be snarky, but the beaches are pretty dangerous too! Plenty of objective dangers there.
Even though people just ignore them anyways, why don't they just post a few warning signs?
Does Olamana have warning signs? It's still open, right?
I hope we can still boulder at Waimea...
