Having now spent the night in my own porta ledge, six inches off the ground. It is a very cool Fish single. I have some thoughts on the question, what would make the ultimate porta ledge...
First, when taking a dump, you should have big wall reading material handy.
Second, a fly with doors would be cool. Can it be made leak resistant? (see homemade ledges in 'drool together' thread)
Third, all the usual great things on ledges these days, light, adjustable, bombproof, etc.
fourth, ventilation, how to accomplish so that condensation is minimized.
fifth, a poop chute in the bed of the ledge. resealable for sleeping compfort of course. Ouch! feel free to step in here.
sixth, built in radio.
seventh, ...

Sure, Munge, easy to put together. You got $5,000.00 to spend? Tough it out, we got dry weather now.

Munge, I designed the perfect one for Fish but I don't think he ever put it into production. Had a builtin bathroom and kitchen. It was a highend item.

oh wow, I didn't realize Ouch posted to this one. that's good one.
Now having spent 3 whole nights in my ledge (one with the rainfly on inside out, like a f'ing doofas), I looked for a porta ledge thread. Found my own lame ass post attempt at tongue in cheek. Sad. Yet I bump anyways. :)

Things I did in my homemade ledge:
1. Ledge is symmetric, as in it has a scuff guard on both long sides to allow you to clip it and and set it up without worrying about orientation (just might have to do a little extra strap adjustments if you screw it up).
2. Asymmetric poles. Long poles are made of a 42.5" pole, and a 39.5" pole with a 6" joiner on the short pole (making it an overall 42.5" length). This makes it fold up tidy.
3. Short poles break in half (same asymmetric pole style, 22.5" and 25.5"). So it can be held together with bungy (no flopping poles), and also folds up very nicely.
Wish list:
1. Pockets, which are very nice on the BD ledge, but I was lazy...
2. Daisies under the long pole (read other folks reports on the Fish custom jobs too late in my construction).
3. Titanium poles (would shave about 4-5 pounds, but cost about $400 in just titanium tubing...).
4. Single set of bed tensioners. Giving the design I chose, I should have only put tensioners at one end, setup and tear down would be easier.
5. Quicklinks on all corners, if they weren't so heavy. Nothing worse than realizing you passed the ledge bundle through itself during setup...

it don't matter, it's still water proof nature. :)

just got the wear spot in the wrong spot, as it were.

Use a bibler (now BD) I tent instead of a fly. A bibler ahwahnee fits perfect on the new BD cliff cabana.
1) I tent has one door, and a "beak" above the door so you can open it a bit in the rain. Ahwahnee has two doors.
2) TodTex material is fuzzy on the inside, making this single wall tent able to hold so much condensation that I have *never* seen it run, despite it being a single wall tent.
3) The tent material does not go around the ledge frame, unlike a fly, meaning it doesn't get pinched between the frame and the wall, doesn't get worn/torn during a storm that moves the ledge, etc.
4) Bombproof shelter set up on your portaledge, natural ledges, the base, or the summit.
5) For those who don't know, its a two cross pole setup, with the poles inside the tent. You just throw your stuff inside, sit inside with the two poles, put the ends in the corners and you're good.
6) Its a multi-function fantastic piece of gear, for mountaineering (whatever!) backpacking and wall climbing, more bang for your buck.
7) Updraft-proof. If you've ever been in a "real" storm with the not-so-sweet BD ledges with the huge holes in the corner and a simple fly, you've had the pleasure of having the warm air evacuated from your ledge/fly every GD time theres an updraft. (hint-there are a lot of updrafts!)
8) It has two little mesh pockets inside, very nice.
9) If you've ever seen anyone try to cram a ledge inside a wrap-around fly solo in the wind, you can imagine the opportunity for fly damage and frustration. This system eliminates that.
Pair one of these with a 9 pound fish double, and you have an awesome system.
-Kate.

Yeah
The Bibler tent can be put up in 30 seconds.
I have one and used it all over the world.
You could set it up in 10 seconds if you're in a hurry.

So how do you rig a tent, on top of a ledge?
Just the I tent? Because the bibler would have to slide under the suspension of a double no?
Invalid without pix....
No really, let's see the setup, I am sick of getting deuched.

I too wondered about how the tent would fit under the suspension straps.
I have a Bibler I-Tent. Bomber. I'm super curious about how to combine it with a ledge now.

I don't think so. The Lime Tostitos were left in the bear boxes.
It might be a bit of this...

Kate, how do you stay tied in while in the tent?
Run the rope out the door, and up to the anchor?
Or, have you put a bomber sling through the top of your I-Tent, similar to the way a portaledge fly is done?
For sure, the use of that tent makes alot of sense. Also, the tent would be useful in other places, too. A portaledge fly would be rather useless on, say, El Cap Tower or the Spire.

Looks like she's reading for rain.

Now that looks like a nice rig.
Looks like it's a bit pinched down by the straps, 360 degrees of watertight goodness though.
