Just be thankful you're not in the judicial system's tentacles (if you're not).

Yeah right TGT, Democrats are famous for making bad deals with developers. The debacle in Mammoth Lakes has Republican written all over it

Measure twice , cut once..The developer , Terry Ballas , built his metal- roofing clad hangers too close to the runway violating FAA regulations...Then he turns around and sues mammoth lakes ...Talk about cry-baby lawsuits...He's crying all the way to the bank....Don't worry...Karma always has the final say....

you know, Mammoth would be Shangri-La if the town were full of Minnesotans rather than Californians. I imagine the place would be a little less methy, a little more budget-balancedy, a little less crimey, a little less bankrupt, a lot less self-important, and so on.

but that's just my opinion; I could be totally wrong about that.

So is the town still planning, hoping, dreaming of having jets come in there? That would suck six ways to Sunday! Freakin' jets coming into Mammoth? Are they out of their minds? I thought that was dead. Please, tell me that plan is DEAD!

They cant even fill the puddle jumpers that fly in here now. The ski industry is dying because the boomers and speculators have priced out the families. Don't worry about jets.

Why should Mammoth Lake's denizens feel so special as to being above having
less inept politards than Stockton?

Yes, that might be partially true. There are fewer middle-class families with the disposable income needed to take extended ski vacations.

But don't overlook this:

Compounding problems, the adjacent Mammoth Mountain ski resort was forced to lay off 70 full-time employees last year due to a dearth of snow.

Do you really think that situation is going to get better?

Adapt, baby, adapt.

But I wonder, what does it mean when a town files for Ch. 11? Does the town become Deadwood?

Mammoth filed a Chapter 9. It is similar to a Chapter 11 however it is tailored to municipalities. City operations continue as normal. The town will propose a plan to pay the debt, I think I read somewhere they were going to propose 500k per year for 10 years. The plan is required to treat the creditors better than how they would get treated if the case was dismissed and the creditor resorted to collection under state law.

A state appellate court decision in December 2010 upheld the judgment and chastised the town for trying to back out of the agreement it signed in 1997 with Mammoth Lakes Land Acquisition.

The agreement required the developer to make improvements to nearby Mammoth Yosemite Airport’s fixed-based operations. In return, it would receive rights to develop a $400-million Hot Creek hotel project on 25 acres at the airport and an option to buy the land.

The court found that Mammoth Lakes changed its priorities in 2007 after it determined the project would interfere with Federal Aviation Administration policy governing the use of the airport property for aeronautical purposes and, as a result, derail the town’s plans to extend the runway to accommodate Boeing 757 passenger jets.

The developer, which had invested in some improvements at the airport, filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the town after it refused to move forward with the hotel project until the FAA policy issues were resolved.

The court found the city had not lived up to its end of the bargain.

Greedy developer, greedy town.
$400 million hotel?
757's into Mammoth?

Tony,

That video is classic.

Mammoth should take heed.

Mammoth is for SoCal, and that is what we want. Don't screw with your bread and butter. Why is June closing? Why weren't the 2 mountains joined by one lift pass?

Don't try to bring in everyone and their mother from Tim-buck-too and hope to fly them in. It's the Sierras and Owen's Valley for goodness sakes. Read the book "Exploring the Monster" about the Sierra Wave phenomenon. There are good reasons not to fly into the region. Saving your life is a good one. How many people fly with a reserve while on a commercial flight? No one. Now I might be over exaggerating some but not a lot. Flying into the region is not for the faint of heart.

There is enough SoCal clientele to keep Mammoth and the Bishop region prosperous in a family and friends sort of wa, like it has always been.

Don't grow beyond your means.

Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

I'm an MVP pass member, but the price for a lift ticket is ridiculous. Image if you're a family trying to ski just for a day. Unbelievably expensive.

Keep your BC gear people.

Adapt, baby, adapt.

There were quite a few of those folks hired back at less pay. They also didn't lay off lifties and bus boys, these were long time employees that were laid off because they could be replaced by a cheaper employee.

This is not related to global warming.

less methy -- prolly
less crimey -- maybe

as for budget-balancey / bankrupt -- do you really live in this state??

less self-important -- dunno, been to Uptown lately? Or pretty much any
restaurant in Mpls? My vote for the most
arrogant, self-important servers EVER..
