I don't play a ton anymore, but for years instrumental guitar was all I listened to. Somehow the notes can say more than words and I would jsut get lost in the melodies of everyone from Vai, Satriani, SRV, Eric Johnson, you name it. Just wondering if there are other enthusiasts out there who would like to post their favorites! I'm a far better listener than a player and its always fun to hear new songs.

To quote one of my favorite lines ever in a guitar mag: "While fretting some mind-bogglingly wild sh#t at 180 beats per minute might not be your cup of tea, you have to admit it's impressive and strangely exhilarating."

Here is one of my favorites:

If you haven't seen the Satriani live! DVD, its possibly the best live guitar performance I've ever seen, he adds extended intros and outros and mixes things up so almost every song is different then the album versions. Based on pure technique and ability he gets my nod for best guitarist on earth (although technically hes an Alien)

And this amazing gem is a one time performance, Deep Purple with Joe Satriani playing lead guitar. Who says shredders don't have soul...

Does it count if it's a hollow-body electric?

Okay, I sneaked in with getting a hollow-body classed as an electric guitar, so maybe I can also get this one accepted, even though it has some singing.

Background: Once upon a time some journalist asked Jimi Hendrix what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. To which Jimi is reported to have replied "I don't know. You'll have to ask Rory."

Well, here's what Rory sounds like. (No real video, but the sound is pretty good)

If you want more, just go to youtube and search for Rory Gallagher

Right on Ghost! I'm a huge Gallagher fan, can't believe hes almost never mentioned even though IMO he belongs up there as one of the most influential blues/rock musicians ever. If Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin had a love child it would be Rory.

Frank Zappa is already posted, so here's some George Clinton (edit, Eddie Hazel). J Mascis does a great version of this one on Mike Watt's Tugboat album.

If you've never heard the story of this man its one of the saddest tales in the guitar world. Jason Becker was a guitar prodigy in the truest sense of the word. At the age of 18 he composed neo-classical shred masterpieces with a musical complexity that would rival Mozart. At the age of 21 he scored the lead guitar job for David Lee Roth's band on the A Little Ain't Enough album. Suddenly and tragically he was stricken with ALS which rendered him completely paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors told him he wouldn't live.

But Jason not only lived. he still lives! Since his brain was still completely active he developed a computer program with the help of his father and he painstakingly composed several songs from his wheelchair, selecting every single note by moving his eyes and his jaw. there is a documentary film coming out called Not Dead Yet, about his life and amazing story.

Such a sad and tragic thing to happen to one of guitars brightest stars. I won't post some of his best stuff unless you guys are into neo-classical shred metal but heres one of his more tame songs.

One more, fun and appropriately titled. Guitarists: watch Morse's right hand when possible. Insane.

Less is more in this electric version of the timeless Follow Your Heart. John McLaughlin, Joe Farrell, Dave Holland, Chick Corea, and Jack DeJohnette from 1970.
