Remember what a sh#t storm that shot caused? Just a fit girl with a string bikini top pulling a boulder problem and this somehow becomes a billboard for misogyny and chauvinism. I was astonished by the negative reactions.

Finally someone else who was amazed started asking people what they were telling themselves internally when they looked at the cover shot and not surprisingly, few people had the courage to answer honestly.

Then they did. People were telling themselves that the cover was telling them that they weren't real women if they didn't look like Rikke, that Rikke was being "used" to sell magazines, that the nefarious aspects of sex and so forth were being trotted out to tell people what to be, what to strive after, how to look, and that anything less was than Rikke . . .

So people were making up all kinds of rot in their head and ascribing their own self talk to the mag, then lambasting the mag for telling them how to be. It was a riot and an eye opening to see and read about.

Then yesterday while rooting through a shed I find the Rikke Ishoy issue and the whole affair seems so quaint and silly and the photo looks just as hot as it ever did.

Just saying . . .

If I recall, that was the issue/photo that put the Happy Boulders on the map. Every hairy palmed beanie wearing mouth breathing pebble wrestler this side of the Mississippi made Bishop a mandatory stop on the tour; just in case she was still there.

It might seem quaint, but here in Boulder, the epicenter of PCness in the world, this way of thinking is alive and well. Us white males need to be very careful what we say.

Heck, I think they have some kind of detectors set up around the city to monitor if we're even thinking a certain way. Violators have been known to have their testicles surgically removed.

I had a back channel note from a girl wanting to bet green money that NO female would honestly respond save to feign disinterest. Hard to believe that is true, but so far . . .

FYI, Rikke has been a big time international rights attorney for many years now.

I'd like to see a picture to judge for myself...

Damn..yeah, she's all that. Probably still outclimbs us. It appears she's sure as hell smarter than most of us based on her accomplishments. Good on her.

That cover didn't offend me.

But neither did the response.

There was a valid point to be made about the type and lack of coverage that women were getting in the climbing mags at the time, and the booby-showing pic was probably just the catalyst for expressing a it.

When the full range of female strengths is being appreciated in due measure (and I do think the mags and much of society have come a long way there), then more women are psyched and not reduced when their boobs are included in the list of things that others value.

I don't know if that unsurprising opinion cost you green money or not, Largo. I've found that women's points of view on issues of equality are often met with rapid fire postings of porn here on the Taco, so the due measure comment above doesn't necessarily apply here and would have probably kept me out of this one if I wasn't waiting for dinner.

Speaking boobs

Some sh!t in the news today said that 1/3 of the women in Briton I think it was (maybe I'm wrong about the country) but anyway ... they would trade their IQ for bigger boobs.

LOL

Edit:
A substantial portion of young women in the U.K. would choose breasts over brains, according to a recent online survey.

If women who climb want to be treated "equally" to men who climb, they need to climb as well as the top men climbers, or make contributions to climbing which are as significant as those of men who climb, in order to receive the same recognition in the climbing media

That's totally bs if you're a business trying to sell me the same piece of entertainment for the same amount of money as a dude. It's all that it is. My interests are worth as much green as yours regardless of how hard the hardest woman climbs, and what interests me is only the same thing as what interests dudes some of the time.

The mags have figured this out though. It's not just about showing a range of women's abilities and interests either. There's a lot more stuff for the male weekend punter as well, IMO.

Rikke and Justin, her boyfriend at the time, spent a few days at my place in 1997, when I was living in Torrey, UT, near Capitol Reef. She's a wonderful human being and my 4-year-old Kyle loved her.

She's a woman and a pleaseure to hang with. Never did figure out what the fuss was regarding that great shot of her at the Happys. Whoever is kicking up the fuss clearly has not spent much time in Denmark or France.

Santorum would love some of the stuff said on this thread.
