Rock art. Does it belong in a National Park or wilderness area? When it is, is it art or vandalism?

Could it be a natural formation? Will we have to clean it up during the Facelift? Stay tuned!

as long as you are not leaving panties and teenage ninja turtle dolls, I think some rock stacking is pretty tame.

It's only vandalism when there are ropes beneath it...

I think that sort of thing is fleeting, anyway.
People pile stones. They always have, & always will.
It's all good.

Knock 'em down. Loads of these things in Yosemite (hike to Lower Yosemite Falls and elsewhere) and Zion (at the entrance to the Narrows). Visual litter.

In Idaho National Forests: the Forest Rangers were burning old mining structures, cabins, and even entire ghost towns, up through the 1960's as "fire hazards." One of the chief fears was: hippies would "re-occupy" old cabins.
Since the 1970's, those old structures are historical, and protected by the Forest Service.
Once fire hazard, now historical.
Definition is everything.

I claim Herman, Brunhilda, Franz, and Katz are art.
All are: just stacked, except I had to drill and dowel the tail on Katz.
Franz blew down a few years back. It took me two years to summon up energy to carry him back up and rebuild. (he was most grateful-----though. He’s been “like a rock” since.)
Now, I check them all a little more often, and chink them with pebbles if they are rocking.

VANDALISM without a doubt.
I tend to destroy things like that in wilderness areas and natural parks.
The call me THE DESTROYER.

Cairns for trails don't bother me, as long as they aren't every 5 feet. I don't need that much help.
Beyond that.. knock them down. Stacked rocks in the river can be cool, but I don't like them in the park. I knock them down.

hey there say, ken.... i thought you may have a post here, like the facebook one, :)
say, as to me, i was brought up thinking they were for emergency trail finders, etc...
however, being kids, we DID love to play with rocks, and tried our skills at making a few small ones....so i understand how folks may get started....
though, after thinking about ken's question, i can understand, too, how eventually some folks MAY try to out-do others and it may 'spread like wild rock'--as opposed to wild fire, ;)
unusual ground cover, then, i reckon, :)
also:
say, skully... that pic that you posted almost looks like a tiny village of some sort... (as from a bird's eye view, looking down to a cave-men type settlement) :))
