A classic account of an early Rowell-Jones-Faint expedition to Hetch Hetchy from Ascent 1971.

Steve, Do you have a site where people can go to download these articles you scan and post? I'd like to read them but the type is so small, it makes it hard for my aging eyes.

Mark,, hold down the " ctrl" key on the bottom right or left of most key boards. While holding it down hit the "+"(plus) key. This will make the image bigger on your screen. You can reverse it by holding "ctrl" and hitting the "-" (minus)key.
Cant remember who showed me this but it works great. That's the only way my old eye's can read most of Steve's stuff.

This is the place!
You may notice that in the lower right corner of your screen (by the clock)is the screen magnifier. Go to 200% and you should be fine.

That caption about "Napoleon's retreat from Moscow" has crossed my mind many times when the visibility begins to drop along with the snowflakes.

While bivied on the terrace on HH Dome, we found/used an old campfire 'ring' (extremely small). It was perfectly/cleverly positioned behind a small boulder so the flames would not be visible from the dam. When we realized this, it brought a chuckle. BTW, the 5th pitch as described in Galen's story is one badass OW indeed..."all the elegance of a dog chasing a cat through a storm drain." 'Couldn't have been said better.

here's from one of Rowell's books... interestingly, the image is flipped...
that story, and that particular image, sparked my imagination at a very young age, and lead to a visit to Hetch Hetchy for climbing in 1971 or 1972...
