Thousands of dolphins are going to be needlessly slaughtered again this September in Japan.
Please sign this petition. Watch the movie. Tell you friends.

The Cove: Help Save Japan's Dolphins

signatures: 354,424
deadline: ongoing
signature goal: 350,000
overview letter
Target: President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki
Sponsored by: TakePart.com/TheCove and SaveJapanDolphins.org
In The Cove, a team of activists and filmmakers infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.

The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It's critical that we get the word out in Japan. Once the Japanese people know we believe they will demand change.

Send a letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki urging them to address this issue. Everyone who signs the letter will be able to have their name displayed in a widget that will be posted on top social networks, web sites and blogs in Japan. ... more

That is great! They need all the help they can get.
You could help save 20,000 dolphins this September by signing this petition.

The movie is an unforgettable one. Watch it (even if you have to do so while covering your eyes on occasion).

So is it the dolphins who are good people, or climbers?

Some people I know here helped make The Cove. Gruesome stuff.

One of the embarrassments of modern Norway is that they continue to do some whaling. Yes, there's no question that they've been doing it for centuries, if not millenia, in their home waters. It's definitely part of their culture. But there's no question that they can afford to stop doing it.

Hey Tommy,
Thanks for the clips.
Dolphins and whales are such intelligent amazing animals.
There is absolutely no benefit in killing them. Their meat has extremely unsafe levels of mercury.
It is very easy to sign the petition and try to help them!
Yeah, climbers care about dolphins. Dolphins care about climbers too.
Dolphins have been known so save drowning people.
It is the least we can do to try to help them.

Killing a Dolphin is a worse crime then what the corporations our doing to us daily and yet we still allow both . Thomas jefferson is sick in his grave with our weak and unconcerned attitudes towards the world around us. Thank you Karen and please keep making a difference.

The Japanese recently ended whale hunting after years of international pressure so we can hope to end this barbaric practice as well. The face saving excuse on the whales was that they were doing it in thanks for all the international assistance after the tsunami. It might take some years still, but I think this will end also if the pressure is continuous.

All these coastal villages are inhabited by mostly older people so all else failing, the custom will die out with them.

20 years ago I was surfing Imperial Beach in SoCal. A wave rolled in that I pondered catching. in it were three forms I thought to be sharks at first. Dolphins. As I sat on my board and the wave passed the dolphins swam right under me. What a thrill.

I'm not seeing the petition.

We not only need to save the dolphins, but lots of other species on the
brink--the Polar bear, the Pika, too many birds, like the Gunnison Sage grouse and others may not be with us for very much longer.
Sort of like the canary in the coal mine. . .

Just a quick thought, are you against any meat or vegan (egg/cheese) items being available?

I always find it strange when people fight for a species that is not in danger of extinction and berate the the rest on why we shouldn't eat it.

Try picking a species that is in need of protection and threatened with extinction, or simply out yourself that cows/chickens/dolphins are endangered.
