Lois seems to think that is pretty silly that someone should think 'climber' when they hear the name Warren Harding.

I think Warren Harding, in times to come, will be remembered more for El Capitan than Teapot Dome.

Please advise.

Here, Lois - I'll even make it easy for you. A link to and article right here on ST about Warren Harding(the one that climbers think of when the name is brought up).

Remember when the Simpsons dropped the name Warren Harding in an episode about climbing, of all things, and we tried to figure out if Simpsons writers were clever enough to double entendre climbing terms/names?

....which, not to open an old can of worms, but I think is RIDICULOUS, considerering Warren Harding has wide support as our Worst President Ever, while Batso, famous as he is in the climbing community, ...I don't even need to finish that comparison.

I think of wine and the old mountain room and stumbling around in a parking lot.

Truely, I knew of the climber, before the president.

Lois, when you were looking for climbing books this is why I suggested "Downward Bound," somewhat dated, but it's all there, all the crap we argue about here.

Warren Harding was one of the best hearted guys I ever met. And in his day he was an incredible character, tough as nails and super bold. Sure, he'd tak a drink now and again, or two drinks, for that matter. But he was the shiz-at, man.

And he was president? Man, I wonder how he dealt with congress with a jug in his hands.

Definitely one of my heroes. The Harding vs Robbins stuff in the early '70s was very fun to follow.

The guy was a bad-ass and a hell of a character from everything I've read... and I've read everything I can find about him. Any "old-timers" out there have any other WH stories to tell?... I'd love to hear 'em.

I have this photo on the wall above my computer.

Looks like he has about 200 pounds on his back. Hair is crazy. Eyes show fatigue. Must have been left handed since his right hand is for separating the ropes on rappel. Teeth kinda gritted. Half smile, half grimace. He smells bad.

Almost 50 years ago with crap gear.

I may have been in Yosemite when that picture was taken. Robbins had just climbed Half Dome and Harding was starting his work on the Captain. Bet big changes have taken place since '57.

I watched an episode of The Simpsons tonite. Homer said the way to the top of the desert tower was to climb through the Warren Harding Hole, which they mentioned several times. Harding's climb up the Lost Arrow Chimney is pretty famous.

The Warren Harding Memorial Through-hole appears in the episode
"Thank God It's Doomsday" - Season Sixteen

Plot summary blatantly stolen from the web:
"An apocalyptic movie followed by three real-life omens causes Homer to fear the rapture. Homer deducts that the event is coming in a week and he believes the only way he can get into heaven is to warn others. A skeptical Kent Brockman does a report on Homer where Homer quotes a Biblical verse involving stars falling from the sky, which later happens during a blimp accident on a "Krusty" special. After a vision (or possibly an ice cream headache) Homer takes the new believers to Springfield Mesa (via the Warren Harding Memorial Through-hole) and awaits a rapture that never comes. A discredited Homer returns home and discovers an error in his calculations. He then returns to the mesa alone after his friends and family turn their backs on him. At the mesa, Homer experiences the rapture (or maybe a heat induced dream) where he rampages in heaven and convinces God to delay doomsday and return Homer to his family."
