When I first came across Super Topo, I was really delighted to find a website dedicated to climbing; I felt that it was a place for me to re-establish my roots in a climber's community and perhaps reconnect with some old friends: Jan and Patrick Oliver. As a consequence of joining the campfire, I soon found that there was lots more going on here in discussions than simply climbing. Sort of ...a discussion around a campfire well lubricated by wine or other recreational substances.
Unfortunately as in all UNMODERATED websites, it bacame apparent that there were folks here with other issues, who used the free forum as outlets for their sociopathic behavioral problems -- and personal attacks went far beyond the norms of simple civility to one's peers and comrades.
As I have frequently stated in a somewhat joking manner on several threads, the first one to begin calling names has LOST THE ARGUEMENT!
I'm sorry to see anyone banned from S-T, as we all "have our moments," but using this forum to stalk others, make threats, make demeaning and slanderous attacks, has caused me moments of reconsideration as to whether or not I will continue frequenting this forum.
Gary Neptune had some great Tee shirts for sale at Neptune's years ago:
CLIMBING MAY BE HARD, BUT NOT AS HARD AS GROWING UP!
I've really enjoyed meeting others with similar interests and views, and contending reasonably with others with whom I disagree. I shamefully look myself in the mirror and now publicly apologize for losing my temper on occasion, here on S-T. I really have enjoyed meeting and climbing with both Ed Hartouni and Fritz, both new friends and now colleagues of the climbing community.
I guess we all are here for some "E's": Entertainment, Education, Escape, and unfortunately, Ego. Maybe if we can all focus on the first three E's, we can renew the sprit of comradeship and fellowship that should be found here on the absolutely great, unmoderated, Super taco website.
Here endith my rant.

I concur. Doesn't get anyone anywhere. Back up your statements with verifiable facts and don't get all huffy when you get shot down. Takes a little effort, but by doing a little research and providing references we all come out ahead in the "edumacation" department.

Just remember though ....
Climbers operate their speech level a lot of times at street level.
So you'll tend to see a lot of "You Moron" and "Dumb Sh'it" "Retard" and you you know all the rest. LOL
You have to a least understand that.
There are no saints here.
Do you want to be "the saint"?
:-)

Werner-
No, no, no! That's not the type of stuff I'm referring to...
We've all called our climbing partners much worse things; if you've ever climbed with any Brits (as I have!), you've heard lots worse. i.e. "Hey $hit for brains--am I on belay?" or "Hey there mate--phuck face--pay attention!" etc.
I'm simply referring to calling our female members "sluts" or "whores" or other unnecessarily demeaning perjoratives. To get down in the gutter, so to speak, where no one here needs to be taken. I'm no saint myself, and have frequently been accused of being "old garbage mouth" by many who know and love me....
There is such a thing as being coarse and vulgar in a good and funny sprited manner, versus vicious attacks in a rapacious manner.

sometime in the 50's my neighborhood gang discovered we could hike better than a mile to the creek in a storm drain. we called it the sewer, but we weren't civil engineers.
before long we learned we could communicate from both ends
and we used a few bad words. we only knew a few.
then in jr. high we heard there was a phone number you could call with our rotary phone (we had a wall mounted one, you didn't see THAT in oppie's house) which led to a common party line where kids unknown could all talk at the same time.
could have been interesting, but actually it wasn't. there was hardly a word spoken that wasn't foul, and i never bothered to even speak up. we had been there done that.
i remember thinking even then, wow, this blows. what a waste.
ironicly, that was in the silicon valley. all our dads worked for outfits like hewlitt packard. mom was still a few years away from helping modernize bell telephone's
billing processes onto stacks of computer punchcards.
so when this internet thing comes around, there seems to be a direct linkage to some primordial part of the human characters at either end of otherwise cool technology,
and we just can't get over the new found freedom to broadcast stupid stuff.
i recognize it and think it might have started with me and my gang. damn it!
that's still unconfirmed, but i do know one thing for certain:
you WILL get all the BS you agree to put up with

I guess what triggered this thread were the comments made by eKat about being stalked and made to fear by a real sociopath. That and several other "ban-XXXX" threads, as well as the attacks made earlier on Crimpie.
Where women are involved, just picture me in shining armor and sitting on a white horse ready to charge....
Yeah, I've had sparring matches with radical, but he's not a mean spirited person, and I actually like having him around as an intellectual foil. He and I would probably enjoy climbing together as well.

Telling some dumbf*#k to eat sh#t is normal.
Werner, you've told me that a time or two here, I believe. :-)
It just seems like garbage is everywhere these days, these damned ceaseless pointless feuds.

Hi Rodger,
Thanks for expressing such a good-hearted sentiment.
I really enjoy all the fun, entertaining stories, good climbing info, trip reports, etc. shared on this forum. I, for one, find it pretty easy to ignore the occasional vitriol (well, sometimes not so occasional), because of all the obviously wonderful people who cyber-dwell here. They are whom I focus on!
Peace, Phyl

I’m against censorship on ST.
That said: let me censor the censors.
The censor problem isn’t C-Mac: it’s the posters on ST that decide to “get after” someone.
Many of us have had “their button pushed:” resulting in a verbal sparring match on ST. Stuff happens.
However the people here who appoint themselves censors, then join a witch hunt, and pursue another member for weeks or months, whatever and wherever they post------------are sick.

Fritz-
I'm not talking about censorship here or anyplace else, for that matter. I don't mind the occasional diatribes, frothing at the mouth type of thing, but I'm directing my wrath at the truly mean-spirited comments directed at others. There are occasional trolls here directed at getting somebody's goat, that are meant to be humorous--and sometimes go out of control overboard.
Moderators? No. I hope that we can be somewhat self-moderating here, and be reasonable-enough adults to avoid deliberately hurtful posts.
Venom and vitriol are as out of place here as they are around the campfire.
JMHO.

I said it on another thread.
We need 3 forum sections;
Climbing
Non-climbing
Kindergarden.
When a thread degenerates into a pig pile then it should earn the disgrace of being consigned to the latter section.

O.K, A.S-
I started this thread as a thoughtful one, not a place for an egomaniac (or, for that matter, plain ordinary variety maniac) to monopolize the thread with his irrational and egotistical outbursts. I can delete this thread anytime I so chose. YOU were not on MY front brain, since I really didn't know anything about your behavioral issues. Pal, YOU'VE OUTED YOURSELF!!!
eKat, who I have never met, had expressed anxiety and FEAR. Others here have had their own bad experiences as well--not involving you.
This was started to discuss the sociopathic and less-than-desirable threads that have been growing almost daily on S-T, and I for one don't care for them. Yes, I could ignore them, but neither can I be the typical bystander watching a mugging without lifting a finger to aid the victim.
Just me, I guess.............

O.K. here is my take.
I don't know Ekat or A.S. I do know people that know her and what I take from her presence here, she is good people and not easily intimidated. If you creeped her out, it may be more than a misunderstanding.
Alex, you are mystery to most people here, so your credibility has to go beyond what you print. Can anyone here back up anything you say? I'm willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, but you will need to give more than words online to keep the hungry lions at bay.
If you are not a climber and just like to hang out here, then you will have to deal with our own form of self-moderation on this non-moderated forum. If you are innocent of said accusations, please explain, clearly. If you are guilty, do the same.
