More like an Iron and Copper mine. Maybe Lithium, too.
China is running the copper mine, so we're hardly monopolizing....

Of course whenever significant mineral resources are found in a politcally unstable developing country, it always has a happy ending.

I was thinking the same thing Myterious.

Of course... that threat of the Taliban is a perfect excuse for all the big busy-body countries (like us) to step in and "help" manage their resources.

The article says that the Russians knew all this, and the US has known for some time- either a few years, or 2004, or who ever you want to believe.

The real question is why they are releasing the story right now? Did the NYTimes just discover this? Hell no. The new doesn't work that way.

A high ranking American "official" pointed the Times in the right direction and gave them the information they needed/

Why now? I don't know, but perhaps to overcome the bad press from Afghanistan. The times had been reporting that Karzai want to cut deals with Taliban leaders because the US is leaving.

Maybe this is designed to salt the public into accepting a longer stay in Afghanistan.

Who the hell knows? But it's not an accident.

What "amazing discovery"?

Afghanistan has been considered a rich source of mineral treasure since before recorded history.

For a while emerald mining was a large source of income for the Talaban, extracting royalties at gunpoint.

Any Afghan news right now = calculated distraction from the Gulf oil disaster.

Maybe Doug, but the Times has had a number of articles critical of Karzai lately, that may lead the reader to believe that the war is useless.

I'm more inclined to believe the "news" is more specific to Afghanistan's problems than to the oil spill.

From the article:

"At the same time, American officials fear resource-hungry China will try to dominate the development of Afghanistan’s mineral wealth, which could upset the United States, given its heavy investment in the region."

Funny how we call disrupting a nation and building military bases an "investment"....

Yes, now you know why we are there, and why this War had to happen according to the powers that be.

"War is a Racket," as General Smudley would say.

This is no "co-inc-a-dink," me thinks.

We are an Imperialist Nation. There are no bones about it. Just massive blood shed.

By the way, you know what this means don't you?

The US of A/Pentagon has just admitted that we are never gonna leave Afghanistan now.

The bases will be permanent. We are Imperialists.

So when is Obama gonna admit this?

I have a lot of issues with this sentiment.

Disrupting a nation??? That ass-pile has been broken since the 50's!!!

Investment??? Do you know how many people gave their lives to fix that broken terrorist haven? How much money we spent to try to wrest a people out of the 13th century?

Bahh! If China tries to start stealing the stuff I'll be really pissed. Sharing some of their resources is a small price to pay for helping these people walk into the 20th century.

EDIT:

The bases will be permanent. We are Imperialists.

So what??? Does Japan have a problem with that? How about the Phillipines? Germany?

Afghanistan has been known for centuries (millenia) as a source of minerals. It's also a relatively easy country to explore for minerals in, as the surface is often mountainous or rocky. Easier to explore, as you can 'see' what's there. That, its central location, and it being located near the oil and gas deposits of central Asia, give it great strategic value.

Afghanistan, at least in and around the major cities, was a reasonably functional and even somewhat modern country until the mid-1970s.

American's feel that it is very criminal to send our US Troops to a country to secure its mineral resources and when troops return with PTSD and other traumatic disorders, deny them medical care promised to them.

That's not why we went there. Or Iraq.

Blue, do you even REMEMBER WHY we went to Iraq? It sure as hell wasn't to "save the nation" from Saddamn. Turns out Saddamn was doling a HELL of a better job than we have done BY EVERY MEASURE.

He wasn't doing too bad compared to some other countries in the region. But do YOU REMEMBER how he did so well??? By what means??? (Google Anfal and the Kurds).

Why was the pathetic U.N. so critical of such a humane man??? Can we not try to re-write f*#king history!!!!

Oh, and there is increasingly more evidence of those WMD's and the Syrian connection.
