NO FENCE LINE - NOTHING WAS POSTED. There is know way in hell we had any clue. Plus I tried to be real real nice to this guy and he was a HUGE dick. We had no beers out, nothing even remotely questionable about us, plus I was polite as sh#t for a while until I realized it wouldn't really matter.

I remember reading awhile back that Scotts Bluff is on private property. Part of the ranch to the south. Yes they are listed in the Domeland guidebook.

I'd suggest actually contacting BLM for a map. There probably are a # of private properties that abut the parkland and I can see not wanting to fence every inch of it or put signs every 10 feet.

Too bad the guy was such an a-hole. He probably has to deal with a lot of trespassers, but if that is the case he should stick a sign up where the majority of the traffic is crossing his property.

BLM website: http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en.html

Edit to add: A lot of guidebooks unknowingly have published access information to crags that crosses private property without the owner's consent. Imagine their surprise when a gravy train of rock climbers show up every weekend tromping through their property with printed material that says it's OK when it's not.

Example: Stupid crappy Mystery Science Theater is 100% impossible to get to without literally walking through someones private backyard. The residents are pretty unhappy that the access info was re-printed in the current Santa Monica climbing guide. The entire crag should have been eliminated from the guide since there is no access. The climbing is garbage and not worth getting yelled at by angry homeowners.

http://gis.mono.ca.gov/Inyo/

this is the link to the parcel viewer for Inyo County...use the 'I' icon in the upper right to identify the parcels...checking the aerial on might help the location process as well...though there isn't a ton of info associated with the parcels...but it might be a place to start....looks like the PIN is the unique identifier...

hope this helps

Been to the BLM website, cant get a map without paying 4 bucks and since I'm unclear as to which I need to buy 4. I'm kinda hoping that the Access fund is aware of this and knows the real propriety line. Guess I'll email them.

As to however mentioned that Scott's Bluff might be on private propriety - that wouldn't surprise me now that I know that there is a landowner down there (it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't the case either) but the f*#k chased us all the way up to the upper tier of Fossil Falls - I WOULD be surprised if the lower tier was on his land.

Walk a mile in the other guys shoes Kev. He's probably spent a lot of time trying to educate argumentative and self-righteous idiots on where he knows the boundary really is.

There's a guy around here that has a nice cliff on his property. He started out liking climbers and letting them climb on his cliff. Then a few idiots showed up, climbers stopped asking for permission to go on his property, they stomped on his plants, broke his fence, left trash behind and argued vehemently when he called them on it. He stopped allowing climbers on his property but they continued to walk right past the new no trespassing signs and got indignant and pissy had to interrupt his day for the unpleasant task to tell them to get the hell off his property LIKE THE F*ING SIGNS SAY. That kind of thing.

Currently the guy hates ALL climbers. HATES ALL OF US BASTARDS, every one of us. Of course, you and I know that 98% of us are good people, but when you and I run into the 2% of the as#@&%es, we can just walk away. Guy who is on his own property can't do that and is just stuck there to deal......then the next good guy with a rope and a rack shoes up and BLAM.

I assume you we're following the Fossil Creek bed to Little Lake. Little Lake is operated as Duck Hunting Club with ties to some conservation agency as a tax front and is essentially owned by ~12 rich Los Angeles types: Think lawyers and doctors. I've always been told that east side of Little Lake was open and the way you came in from the north was also. You probably got the caretaker with the attitude treatment: Bummer

Couch,

1) There was never a fence.

2) You really think a redneck driving a 4wheeler over the desert at high speed over desert fauna cares about plants?

3) How does that even begin to make it ok to threaten to return with a gun?

Whoever mentioned another way in to the crag - we took the most direct without rapping in. His issue was not with climbing - rather his issue was anyone anywhere.

Being a caretaker of a large parcel surounded by federal land myself, in the middle of a highly traveled area, I find this guys approach to be less than optimal.

When ever I deal with trespassers, and I deal with them alot, I always start out nice. There's no need to escalate the situation until there is good cause to do so.

I'd definately contact the BLM land manager for the area and find out what's going on.

The truth is it may require interaction with the owners. Caretakers have a tendency to start believing they "own" the land and can get quite out of control. Which is the reason my wife and I are now running the property instead of the previous couple.

Please post up what you find out.

krahmes,

We parked at the fossil falls blm parking. Followed the obvious trail to fossil falls (as indicated by both pictures and map) on the BLM sign. We then scrambled down to lower fossil falls and continued to follow that canyon directly to Scotts bluff. Dude chased us up to UPPER fossil falls.

Are you saying Scotts is OK, and as I assume lower fossil falls is definitely ok?

Contact the Access Fund, and/or whoever is the regional coordinator for the AF. Your first step is to obtain accurate information about who owns what, and where property lines are. You can probably do that yourself through the county records office, but the AF may already have the information, plus information on discussions/agreements with landowners, the BLM, etc.

rlf,

The whole thing was bogus. He races up to us in a 4wheeler and starts yelling to "get the f*uck off his properity." That was how the interaction started. I remained nice and polite, saying no problem and explaining we had no idea. Even started to show him the guide book. It never got any better. If he had been nice polite, or even remotely reasonable I would not be seeking out the sherrif, etc. But since he was such an ass I feel I am doing a community service on this on.

We had Rose Valley EA issues with the LL group and in discussions with my manager, that was my understanding of the boundarys (so it's somewhat heresay). Lower Falls for sure is ok. If you didn't cross any fences and it wasn't posted NT the guy was way out of line. Certainly no right to menance you with a gun on BLM land. In few days it'll be to hot and smeary to bother with that basalt anyway.

here's what you do.
take me with you next time. i'll wear my skirt.
when the fella approaches, i'll be polite.
when he turns sour, i'll lip off to him,
and you can video him attacking me, while i restrain him in self defense.

then we can calmly dispose of him according to our legal eagles.

now if he's packing heat, no deal.
