I removed my gold wedding band while climbing in the Valley this past weekend, put in the pocket of my pack, but have lost it. Ed, Rik, Anders, and I climbed at the Potbelly at Knob Hill, Bishop's Terrace, and the CS Concerto (half way between After Six and the Nutcracker). If anyone finds it, I would like to get it back--I have worn it for 30 years. There is an inscription.

Just know a ring is replaceable, what it represents is within you and can never be taken away.

Also: an interesting question for another post sometime might be what do people do with their wedding/engagement rings while climbing? I usually leave it out of sight in the car so it doesn't get lost...

Roger, good luck in finding your ring.
Anastasia, I'd like to see what would happen if you lost yours!
I prefer not to take my ring with me when I'm in the backcountry/climbing. I've heard plenty of people tell me about tying on a necklace with cord, etc and placing the ring on it. I'll probably be doing that when I'm in Peru in July.

Thanks Anders. Thanks for the comments everyone. I feel terrible. I rarely take if off. I always take it off while climbing but that has only been four times in 30 years. I catch myself pushing against its lower edge with my thumb and it’s not there.

Roger good luck, I hope it turns up.
My wife's diamond came out while gardening about a year ago, she was crushed, but at least I had it insured as it was a healthy sized stone.
I always take mine off and leave it in the house when I skate or climb locally.
When I am doing something big in the mtns or a wall, I usually make a necklace outta some cord and put it on that so its vitually impossible to lose, in less of course my head falls off.

Roger,
Did you take it off the first day at Knob Hill/ Potbelly, that pitch only? Did you climb C.S. Concerto first pitch, or the whole route to the top? I am often there working, I'll also mention this to my co-workers.
Sorry to hear you've lost your wedding ring, I will take a look around at the areas you mentioned; would be so great to find it.
It was a great pleasure to meet you this past weekend; really enjoyed our conversations, and we laughed!

Hi Jo,
I had so much fun laughing with you, Lynne, Kauk, Rik, and Ed in the courtyard. It was great to meet you.
I took my ring off at Pot Belly. I was careless in leaving the pocket zipper open so it is likely that it fell out walking to and from the climbs or at the bases. I followed a strict rule on no multi-pitch climbs--I don't trust myself to stay secure on a belay, at least not yet, so my pack was only on my back or the ground. (I know, I know, that sounds so lame. But about five years ago, I was climbing in JT with Bridwell and rappelled off a route with a system that would have fallen apart if I had twisted one way or the other. I had checked it several times. There is an indeterminacy in judging how well my automatic responses are to stuff I have not done for so many years. In some cases my muscle memory was on automatic mode and I would find myself with good jams and the proper stance without knowing what to do next. Stare, Breedlove, stare. Think forcryingoutloud. Then is would slowly come into focus and I could move up. )

Well, Best of luck recovering the ring and all, but I'd like to skip to
your last post.
This is intriguing, to get a glimpse of this process of a knowing
climber recovering his knowledge, as one veil after another is stripped
away.
I hope you are writing about this as you go. It's sure to be educational
and no doubt entertaining.
Brief as it was, I'm glad to have finally met you.

hey there - i remember a conversation in c4 thurs or fri night. camp #6. some climbers from the east coast (maine) had found a wedding ring. i believe he said he was leaving it at c4 booth but really not sure - pm me for more details!!!

so sorry to hear that your wedding ring is missing Roger...
I am pretty sure I remember seeing you with it on at Manure Pile on Monday... but memories being what they are I could be wrong.
Perhaps Yosemite Valley was jealous of you're being stolen away and wanted you back?!
If the leads don't pan out I'll take a look around next time I'm there, having been with you the whole time climbing...

I know that metal detecting for booty is a no-no in the park, but is it OK for finding something that you lost?

I know what I will do... I will do my best to find it, than come to you crying, apologizing and feeling horrible. It is never nice to lose one's wedding ring.
P.S. If I do lose mine, does that mean I can get a bigger one? ;)

Yikes! Will she understand? Sorry about that Roger. Good to hear you're climbing again though. Last we talked you sounded like that just wasn't in your cards anymore.
Have you ever seen those pictures online of the de-gloved fingers? Sorry you lost the ring but glad you take it off when climbing. That thing will jam just like a stopper!
