That Fresno paper really cut that story down.

Here's the straight press release.

At approximately 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2010, the Yosemite Emergency Dispatch Center received a call regarding a climber that had fallen on a popular climbing route on El Capitan. The climber, a 48 year old male from France, fell approximately 65 feet and sustained head and chest injuries and a loss of consciousness. A second party on the climbing route was able to provide basic emergency medical assistance until Park Rangers arrived.

The climber, and his partner were on a popular climbing route on El Capitan called the Salathe Wall. This is one of the most famous and popular technical rock climbs in the world. In its entirety, the climbing route spans 3,500 feet in length. The accidental fall occurred on a prominent feature on the route known as the El Cap Spire, at approximately 1,600 feet above Yosemite Valley.

Two Yosemite National Park Rangers were airlifted to the location of the injured climber at approximately 7:00 a.m. today, Friday, May 21.
Additionally, a team of twelve search and rescue personnel were airlifted to the summit of El Capitan to provide further assistance. Once Park Rangers secured the climber, a California Highway Patrol helicopter assisted in hoisting him off of the climbing route. He was then airlifted to Doctors Medical Center of Modesto.

The cause of the climber’s fall is unknown.

my understanding is that he should really consider leaving the US in order to recieve proper medical attention, without cost, back in France!!!

The climber, a 48-year-old man from France

Maybe this accident won't cause him to be bankrupted.... Like any good red-blooded 'Merican...

Not to mention.. people from other countries getting medical in the US...

Isn't the entire right opposed to this?

That's the latest press release. I hope the guy lives. Head injuries are bad, but surviving the night is a positive in my experience.

The Modesto Bee adds this minor item to the report:
His fall was stopped by his climbing gear, Cobb said.

squishy -- You wonder why, because the report first came in after 8:00pm last night.

Anyways ....

Air Med transferred him to the hospital after Ranger Jeff Webb and Jack Holfick were lowered by CHP to EL Cap Spire where they then rapped down to the alcove below and packaged the patient.

He was then hoisted aboard the CHP ship back to the meadow.

The Sar team was staged at the top of the Salathe in case the hoist was not possible for raising the patient to the top.

I don't know the current status of the victim other than he was still unconscious when Jack and Jeff got to him.

Lighten up, alright already.

Dude fell. Has a head injury. Was unconscious when SAR got to him 11 hours after he peeled. Had to be airlifted out. That’s bad news, ya think? Has nothing to do with anything besides what it is.

Best of luck, Salathe French Dude. Thanks to YOSAR and CHP for risking your hides for strangers.

Why the rage, Weschrist?
