Just curious. I see more and more that gang culture is becoming mainstream. "what up" "homey's" "bro" "brah"

Personally I find nothing about the gang culture amusing or reasoned.

Agreed John. Nothing there worthy of emulation or adoration.

Hey Brah,
Saying hey brah is not gang culture although they may have adopted it. Its Hawaiian culture, surf culture. Shaka!

Woah woah woah. "bro", "breh" etc... Are NOT gang slang, they are most certainly part of the "bro" movement that came from the surfer anti-culture (similar to how the Beat Movement turned into the hippies).
I don't know what kind of gangsters you have where you're from, but I haven't heard any of the local hoodlums use those terms, just broken english [ain't no, etc...]
Those words should not be associated with gang bangers, those fools have their pants on the ground and shirts that are waaaay to big. I prefer tighter clothing [but not girl jeans tight] and proper grammar, as do most of my friends. Please don't give up hope for my generation.
And to answer your question, I don't know why I embrace gang culture [I don't], I guess it's just peer pressure, or as the wise Ice Cube once said "gangsta rap made me do it."

Nor is saying bro gang culture. I say bro all the time and I am the least gang affiliated person ever. Just a good ol' taxpaying dirtbag here, the only gang-banging I do is killing gophers tearing up my lawn.

You don't even know what real gang culture is given the examples of your post. I recommend you go for a ride along down in the Rampart district. It will put your nice cozy suburban house in perspective.

Thank you t*r, social climber and studly. I agree.

More than words gang culture is about us against them....and ya know some of the fiercest "gang" culture" I've ever experienced is in the corporate world. They don't pull a gun and blast you at the meeting. Nah, it's the old knife in the back trick. They kill alot more cleanly and dress to the 9's when they do it.

But both parties, corporate bangers and gang bangers, usually pull away from the hit in a "hot mobile". Ja!!

I just know there's a Sierra Club newsletter from 1961 where some grizzled veteran is wondering why all the youngsters in the valley are calling each other "cats" and saying "Heavy, man." What are they, a bunch of jazz musicians?!

If we're calling frats gangs, then I see where "brah" is gang speak.

Still hits my ears like their talking brassieres though, so it rings somewhere between effeminate and just plain strange to me.

It's particularly amusing when Reilly uses it. Being that he's a white bread boy from whiter than white Alberta - even when it's not snowing.

If I don't use yo, bro, homie etc. a lot in my daily day I feel like life has lost its luster. It's fun to learn to experience and joke around and lighten up and just enjoy our trip around this grand and glorious globe.

I guess when Dan died I got kicked out of the middle age, what's expected mold and discovered a lot of wonderful things from many "groovy" (may I use that word ?) people. We can draw much from others to make our life richer. Drawing lines just separates. Communicating love to the people who walk thru our lives, even if it is only one time, that's living. IMHO. So now I grab fun stuff from all the people and cultures whose paths I cross.

I got gangbanger stories. Real ones. Love and a smile made a difference in their lives. I gots the proof Homie. And sum times I be wearing the Homies Jacket. :DDD

We must have been exposed to at least a few Peter Fonda Biker movies when I was a kid, because everything we liked was "cool", and "man" was used at the end of every sentence just like a period. Sometimes that was enough for a complete sentence, as in "Cool, man."

It's just kids trying to be punks, that's what kids do. A tradition as old as time.

misterE- Not trolling. Just wondering why the gang culture is being accetped in the mainstream. To me it has no place in my life. Why would anyone want to embrace a culture that accepts rape, robbery? Why do we accept that venacular and espouse it?

Because I've seen Born Losers, the Wanderers, and the Warriors far too many times, each.
