Anyone know how much is open? Can you get to Horse Flat? Tunnel Crags? Anyone been up there lately? Thanks

I'm not from So Cal, I know there was a fire, but I had no idea what areas it encompassed. So does that mean
Forest closed in all burn areas
that if Horse Flats didn't burn, I can drive there and climb there?

Williamson will be back, they have a plan, I read it online. Looks like they will be building a new trail, and London Wall and other walls nearest the creek will be closed for good. But it will be back. I know Troy Mayr and Jeff Brown could tell you more, or do a search online. They are organized and have done a great job, tons of hours and effort on Troy's part especially.

Bummer about the forest, and Horse Flat, although cool that it didn't burn.

Slater, Hi.

We will never be allowed back to williamson ever, mark my words.

And willie without the london wall and stream wall to climb at is sort of like all the Valley being closed to climbing except for the manure pile.

welcome to BIG GOVERNMENT taking over.

Hey Guy, is that a hunch, is your spidey sense tingling, or is that based on the falling out of the current dialogue between the two parties?

I was told that it was looking optimistic.

Highway 2 was open for a couple of weeks between the end of the fire and the beginning of the mudslide season. I was surprised that it opened at all, given how long the other side was closed (years). The road, though freshly fixed, was a mess. Fallen rocks everywhere, so no fun to drive. There were some big slides when the rain started, and now the scuttlebutt is it's closed til summer, whatever that means.

I'm not surprised, the road system down low is devastated. Roads that were 20 feet above the creekbed are just gone. An amazing amount of dirt and ash has flowed down the arroyo. Boulders 3 m high are no longer visible, just buried.

I'm pretty sure you can hike from Newcomb Ranch (since it seems you are allowed to park there) to Horse Flats, no? If you do, post up about the state of the bouldering area post-inferno.

Bandito group campground is open. Its on the Santa Clarita divide about 1/4 mile b4 horse flats. It's a group campground and you have to make reservations and I think it's expensive. But HF is still closed, but you might be able to hike in. Most of the forest above newcombs should open soon because it didn't burn. Buckhorn campgroud (just past Mt Waterman) should open once the snow melts.

I've been riding up there lately and it's other worldly in many areas due to the destruction.

People are parking near some swimming holes and many are parking at newcombs and hiking.

Technically, the forest is closed but Sheriff/CHP are being lax about enforcement. I personally would not attempt to park and climb at Horse Flats. You never know when a LEO will decide to enforce the current closure and this could put you at a great disadvantage.

I'd park at Newcombs and hike/bike a couple of miles to HF if I really needed a fix.

Williamson will re-open, but will close again indefinetly when the FS realizes thier plan is total BS and the Center for Biological Diversity gets wind of folks not walking exactly where they tell them to.

Slater, Don't forget Pacifico Rocks in yer book. It's a small but classic & historic place. (also in the burn area right now). A few years ago when Royal was in town he actually bivi'd there on his way home (at least he said he was headed up there). Photo of him climbing there at age 16 in his Basic Rockcraft book.

Saw a mountain lion 1/4 mile past Newcombs yesterday...about noon. I was heading up to ski, and it was crossing the road as I came around the turn. Big cat! I see Bobcats all the time up there, but they are tiny in comparison.

It's really nice up there now. NOBODY there! It's like you have the whole place to yourself...because you do! ACH is open to Islip Saddle.

Hey spider do you have a guide or any info on the climbing at pacifico? I've been up there several times and haven't found anything besides a few boulder problems.

You can access the Angeles Crest from the Palmdale side. Pretty sure they have Hwy 2 closed from Pasadena due to slides and rock damage. I know it will be open from the north because the AMGEN (Stage #6) will be running through May 21st. CALTRANS still has their gouge posted. Pretty sure it'll be open before the Schleck Brothers "fly" through:

SR 2
[IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
IS CLOSED FROM 2 MI EAST OF THE EAST JCT OF I 210 TO 14 MI EAST OF
LA CANADA (LOS ANGELES CO) - DUE TO STORM DAMAGE REPAIR - MOTORISTS ARE
ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

IS CLOSED FROM ISLIP SADDLE TO 5 MI WEST OF BIG PINES (LOS ANGELES CO)
FOR THE WINTER - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

ALL TRACTOR-SEMI TRAILER COMBINATIONS WITH 3 AXLES OR GREATER ARE
PROHIBITED FROM THE JCT OF I 210 /IN LA CANADA-FLINTRIDGE/ TO THE
ANGELES FOREST HIGHWAY (LOS ANGELES CO) - ALTERNATE ROUTES ARE AVAILABLE

Not a whole helluva lot there. The main stuff is west of the campground. Used to be able to drive right up close, but the "road" is the PCT, and it's blocked these days. Not really worth walking up there for so little reward, unless you've never been there, it's worth checking out once. Some stuff around the campground, but nothing spectacular. I do like camping there though. It's right on top of Pacifico, and you can see the lights of Palmdale at night.

Yeah mooch, they changed the start of the bicycle race from La Canada, to Palmdale. They head up and across ACH, and finish at Snow Summit in Big Bear. Not gonna have that big ass hill climb to start with, should be easier.

You can get up the Crest by exiting the 210 at Sunland and taking Oro Vista or Mt Gleason to Big T to Angeles Forest Hwy to Upper Big T to the Crest.

Islip, Big T, etc. means nothing to a visitor.
Can you drive up Hwy. 2 and climb at Horse Flats? Anyone been lately?
That's why I'm askin' ya'll instead of reading a Cal Trans site.
Gracias.

No, you can't climb at Horse Flats.

As already stated, it's not burned, but the road is closed. Signs saying; "Closed to Public use", seen just as you turn off ACH onto Sulpher Springs road. Then about 2 miles in, a locked gate will be encountered.

ACH is open to Islip Saddle. You can access Spring Crag, Tunnel crag, and you can drive by and look at Williamson Rock.

Saw some PCT thru hikers on Monday. They were detouring on the highway, 'cuz a section of the trail is closed because of the frogs.

Thanks Rincon, I was hoping things had changed since originally asked. I appreciate it. I wish they'd open the place since it didn't burn. Doesn't make much sense to me. Your report made more sense to me than the Cal Trans one I read.

On a related note... is Spring Crag "Vista Mountain" on Brent's Tunnel Mountain mini-guide? If not, where is it and how do I find info about it.

Horse Flats is technically in the closed area. I don't recommend going there. I have heard that non burned areas in the closed area may open before august. the burned areas will not open until after august.
