In 1972 Camp IV and the Rangers had a Baseball game, along with a keg or two of beer. This shot, taken by Gene Foley, shows one Ranger (and a few others from CampIV that eventually joined the NPS. Terry Pimental is the Ranger, playing catcher. The batter is Chuck Cochran, who played in the LA Dodgers farm league before he discovered climbing.
Werner, Kid Carrot, Bruce Hawkins (just down from the NA Wall I believe) Bill Bonebrake, Tim Harrison, Chris Vandiveer, Jeff Mathis, Bruce Brossman, Mark Chapman, and a lot of other folks in this one.
BTW, Camp IV won the game, 2-1. I don't recall that there was ever a second game

This looks like a good guess who is who photo, I'll start with Chris VanDiver just right of the batter, slightly bending over with the white head band.

Dick, you are correct, that is Chris.
I don't think Ron is in the picture, and neither is Breedlove.
The thing I always liked about this picture was Chuck's stroke and that ball sailed...

Funny, That is me sitting to the left of Tim Harrison, and Jeff Mathis is on the other side. Ron was in Yosemite at the time, but I don't think he made the game. Some people climbed back then :}

Anybody remember Herb Swedlund? Behind the backstop. Introduced me the Majister Ludi one night in the Mountain Room Bar. Nice book. Good guy.

Thanks for the IDs and also their locations Kevin. After the sixties I was never in the Valley for long continuous periods, but I kept hearing stories about the guys there. Like the fifteen year old kid Ron Kauk who showed up and could do just about anything. I knew Jerry Anderson from earlier before he had the great beard, and never would have recognized him.

OOOPS! Correction, Jerry Anderson is standing on the far right in the back, behind Bonebrake (standing in front right with the plaid shirt.)
The guy in the RR cap was from Europe as I recall, or maybe the UK. The guy between the cap and Vandiver worked at the Mountain Shop for over twenty years. His nickname was Mouse, I can't remember his name.
Mike White is also behind the backstop.
Don't know what happened to Paul, I moved to Sonora In 1975, and San Francisco five years later, and then finally Napa. I think my last climb was in '78.
Oh, and my name is Vince Goetz....I climbed and worked for the NPS and Curry Co, climbing spring and fall, and working winter and summers. I did spend one winter in the rescue site, and the saving grace was the bar and Jeff Matthis making his coffee and babycakes in the morning. Hu used to get out his bible, read the morning reading, and then roll it into a nice fat bomber to start the day...at 20 degrees that was a great combo...
And yes, that is George Meyers....
Some good memories here. Who says we all forgot the seventies...

I don't think I am there. And unless someone can prove otherwise, I assert I was climbing. Now that you have posted a picture Vince, you need to post one of yourself.

Roger, nice to be here.
Bought a scanner today....as you can see.
Might have a few good ones left, but most of my images in the seventies were owned by the NPS. Wish I could get into those boxes...

Warbler, I can't remember his name. I should, I bought a 1961 VW Van from him. I went to his folks house once, above the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, I think you could have watched the games from their eastern windows...

Foley, from SF and had a great truck to live in.
Taught me, I still have one...
My last memory of him is firing rockets in El Cap Meadow, and they flew over 3,000 ft. He was a wonderful piece of work.
Anybody know what happened to Steve (Slings) Williams? There was another lad that stretched the universe....
