Not sure if it has been posted here, but Dean Potter found a higher exit on The Eiger that makes it probably the biggest base jump in the world.

My friend Matt Gerdes became the 3rd person to repeat this and has a pretty awesome post with GPS tracks, photos, etc on his web site

check it out http://www.matttg.com/eiger.htm

(in 2006 tried flying to Grindelwald and came up sooooooooooooo short. so i decided it would be better to just fly next to the wall, which i did in the first jump on this movie http://www.youtube.com/flyairmac#p/u/7/0lIxUvFHL-8 and the jumper who goes off ahead of me, JT Holmes, will be in the 60 minutes episode on sunday http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/979428/Wingsuit_BASE_on_60_Minutes_October_11 )

Dig this when he says...

"Largely unrelated: Here's another big one much closer to home, called the Dent de Crolles. This beauty is an 1800m wingsuit flight with a nice long plateau that you have to clear if you want to get all the vertical out of the jump. Lots of people do it, but when you're standing on the exit point it definitely looks impossible. Tons o' Fun."

hah

This jump makes me think.... and what I want to know is whether or not military could effectively use BASE to mount a small attack on a remote valley location?

critical concern -

getting out of a wing suit effectively
carrying sufficient survival and attack gear
distance max based on height of jump point
is paragliding a better method? next to impossible at night or in rotor winds?

Thank's,
I assume 1 or the other is being shown this weekend?

Btw,

Certainly seems that way to me, but I could be wrong. I guess the added distance/height with the wingsuit changes things though.

The Trango jump looked scary as hell.

the Great Trango Tower is about 6,000 feet, the Eiger jump is over 8,000 feet when you fly out to the valley

yes... the new exit that Dean found is at 3540m. Grindelwald Grund, the bottom of the valley, is at about 930m.
in feet, i guess the vert is about 8500.
if you guys can think of another mountain with around 600 feet of vertical on top that isn't several days walk from civilization, tell us about it! ;-)
it's amazing (and very logical) how climbers and climbing guide books have contributed so much to new wingsuit jumps in the past 10 years.

Great post Chris...

I thought this little blurb on that site was rather telling...

"If you want my .kmz file then I will send it to you if I know you and I like you."

bwahahahahaha

not just anyone is getting my flight info!!! LOL

Too funny..

also, that last photo on the site of the Dent de Crolles flight..

that looks rather scary from where I sit, and can only imagine the terror in the veins of any who stand up there looking at their intended flight path... I can only imagine... "You just jump?".. "Yes.." And I'm supposed to fly over that other hill way down there...? "Yes... everyone does it!!!"

"WHAT?"

Nice post.. but I'll stick it out here on the ground!

This stuff is outasight man! I found this video of ski gliding the Eiger.
I hope that it hasn't been posted before. The French Cats have got some real 'nads. It seems to leave open a lot of possibilities of skiing/wing suit combos for base jumping. Next.

Bump. The creator of that cool GPS track, Matt Gerdes, just started taking Pre Orders for his book The Great Book of BASE http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1212187/Great-Book-of-BASE-is-here-BASE-jumping-explained
