Just noticed a thread posted on Gunks.com, saying this last weekend somebody stole about $9,000 worth of gear out of the rescue cache in the Trapps. Here's the thread:
http://www.gunks.com/ubbthreads7/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/40652/page/1/gonew/1#UNREAD

I can't imagine a person who actually has climbed more than in the gym would do such a despicable act, and am guessing it's a couple of dumfck kids who were upstate leaf-peeping with their parents and thought nothing of helping themselves to climbing gear.

But who knows what happened.

Still - a good idea to keep our eyes out for supsect gear for sale on the various sites, or a couple of idiots with 300 foot (static) ropes trying to figure out how ascenders work.

Help pass the word to other websites. the Gunks gets visitors from all over the country and the world, and last weekend was about as high season as it gets for tourism.

Meth heads looking to score gear for their next fix. Fuuckers are running rampant all over. The bung holes stole my commuter bike last week.

No sh#t. I am pretty certain the box even has a sign on it that specifies it is rescue gear. Meth heads is one option, but I can't really imagine them parking a cra and walking the quarter mile or whatever to the site where the cache is located. Not like there's anything else out there of value to an addict.

As for adults - sure there are rednecks who steal. Construction equipment and tools, stuff like that. But from a rescue cache? I don't know about that.

That's why dumb kids is the scenario I imagine.

On another note - there was no Ranger Coffee this last weekend(and last, I think). The Mountain Bistro has been provider 2 pots with milk, sugar and cups for preserve visitors each Sunday. It's sort of a nice little gift and though a lot of people don't expect it....if you had come to realize that there'd be coffee there on Sundays and were counting on it....it reallky SUCKED for it not to be there.

Got an email from our trailcrew boss about next week, and it it he mentioned the reason for no coffee was that someone had stolen those two pots! They are usually sitting in the back of a ranger pickup so people can help themselves. And of course the rangers don't sit there and guard the damned things.

The starship USS Enterprise LeafPeeper has been sighted the last 2 weeks depositing its armada of touron’s conquering all and asking ‘how did you get the rope up there?’ I nearly killed several in one shot as they were standing in the middle of the road snapping photos of some roadkill.

whoever did this will likely fall and be fatally injured and thrash around desperately waiting to be rescued...but won't be!

Even better if they COULD have been saved but eventually succumb to complications.

Yeah. I know; TOO much to ask for,...

Perhaps the thieves will decide that the (static) rope that they stole would be a fine one for leading with.

Its even more shameful in light of the fact that there was just a fatality this past week.

hey there happiegrrl... say, too bad there is not enough role models for being a:

HERO...

then, instead of stealing stuff like this, folks would be out learning how to work, buy stuff to help others, and know what "rescue" means, and want to be part of helping, instead of hurting, mankind...

sad news... for sure, for the rescue folks, those that need it, and for the future, too...
