Mammut to Sponsor Largest U.S. Climbing Competition at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2008
Salt Lake City, Utah (July 14th, 2008) – Mammut Sports Group USA, providers of Swiss quality alpine gear and apparel, and title sponsor of the 3rd annual Mammut Bouldering Championships series announced today the professional tour’s season finale will be on Saturday, August 9th, from 6:30 to 9 pm at the Shilo Inn (206 South West Temple), in Salt Lake City, Utah. Held during the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market Trade Show, the Pro Finals will draw the world’s biggest names in rock climbing to compete for a $10,000 cash purse, the largest purse in U.S. climbing. Based on last year’s event, the 3rd annual Mammut Bouldering Championships are projected to draw roughly 2000 attendees and 120 athletes from around the world.
“In just three years the Mammut Bouldering Championships has grown into one of the leading professional climbing competitions worldwide,” said Pete Ward, CEO and Managing Partner of NE2C, the producers of the Mammut Bouldering Championship and the Spring 2008 Gravity Brawl. “Mammut has been the title sponsor since the start, which speaks volumes about their commitment to the sport of climbing and its audience. This series is a platform for the brightest new stars to showcase their skills, and equally as important, it opens the door to aspiring climbers and the general public to a growing sport and its lifestyle.”
The pro qualifiers will be held on Friday, August 8th, at The Front Climbing Club (1450 South 400 West) from 12 to 9 pm, and registration is open to all. The top twelve male and female competitors will advance to Saturday’s Pro Finals, where they will compete on four routes and scored by how high they reach on each one, in under five minutes. Past winners have included world-renowned climbers Chris Sharma and Lisa Rands.
"Our intent with the Mammut Bouldering Championships is to reach out to the national and international climbing community while also supporting young athletes and the sport itself," said Ian Connor, Marketing Manager for Mammut Sports Group USA. "What we’ve seen during the progression of this comp circuit is excitement from the athletes and the crowd, and a developing interest in the sport in a way that welcomes climbers of all abilities, and non-climbers as well.”
Entry to the championships is free for Outdoor Retailer badge holders. There will be a $15 door fee for the general public, and food and beverages for sale onsite.
