Hey all-

You might recall some gigapixel images we have done before on Yosemite at http://www.xrez.com. We are planning a much larger high-resolution project in Yosemite soon which should really benefit climbers, you can read about it here:

http://www.xrez.com/yose_proj/Yose_index.html

On Sat May 30, we will have 20 photographers shoot coordinated gigapixel images all throughout the rim (http://www.xrez.com/yose_proj/Yose_valley_shoot_locations.jpg);, covering most of the walls in amazing detail. We will then map all the gigapixel images to a 1M high resolution 3d model and extract a continuous long image of all the valley walls, potentially one of the largest terrestrial images to date. This will end up online w/ deep zoom capabilities of the entire valley. Anyway, I know the climbing community will benefit greatly greatly from this, so wanted to give a heads up! It probably won't be completed until early August, but should be a great reference once it is online.

For some reason the shooting location link keeps redirecting to the main xRez site when clicked on. So don't click on the address below - instead cut and paste it directly into your browser address textbox and hit return:

Ed and I were listening to you guys Saturday as we climbed Sentinel Rock. By chance, we were on the same FSR Channel.

Looking forward to seeing the results of your effort.

Spotting Gary and me in the pano will be a real test of just how comprehensive the shoot is!

We were in a very unvisited place... (and one I'm not likely to ever return to, at least the upper scramble!).

Am I missing much? It sounds cool.

bump - extreme detail, but also an extremely long wait for it to be displayed
how's the zoom on a fast connection?

Xrez is great - I like to use it to zoom in on areas and draw lines for the climbs.

Today I was checking out the base of the left side of Goodrich Pinnacle, as I had just climbed The Mouth there with Robert Summers last weekend. Here's the image of the base area:

This didn't look right to me - as I know there is a lot of sand and talus there (and sometimes snow), and the first pitch of The Mouth wasn't there.

It turns out a lot of this image is cloned (sections copied and pasted). Maybe they didn't get the base photos, or the files were lost? Here is my reconstruction of the cloning:

Overall the quality of the Xrez images is great and they are a very nice and free resource. But I thought this was interesting.
(This is the only cloning I've found so far, and I've used the site for several hours so far).

The project sounds great - but as Clint pointed out: still a few bugs?

I would hope the cloning was not intentional, as that may be misleading...

Staying tuned,

Christ, Clint. Thanks for this. This is not the left side of Goodrich in detail but cloned-in for sure. It just is not.

You guys are blowing my mind.

First the OP for having this expansive vision and then putting it together. Kudos

Second to Clint for being aware, awake and curious enough to spot the cloning

Peace

You can't 'shop such a tiny area of a HUGE picture like that (and why bother ?) . You're just confusing what it looks like in person , with : from a long ways away .

Hey guys, I am one of the leaders of that project, thanks for spotting that. I assure you it was not intentionally cloned, but rather a stitching error from our stitching app. The problem w/ doing gigapixel photog is that we can never closely inspect all of the imagery due to the vast amount of it. I will look into that stitch and see if I can correct it, but in the meantime enjoy the images, but only use them for general reference..

thx
