So,
the other night in a Boulder Restaurant where Bob works as the bar manager a question was posed to him........
"Hey didn't you used to be Bob D'Antonio the climber? I mean didn't you used to climb all the hard routes and get into fights and stuff"? Granted Bob did look a little more professional than one would expect in his nice sports coat, short cropped greyish hair and polished shoes but, still.........Now being an older climber myself I began to reflect? So, who did I used to be? I'm not who I was (some might say "thank god") but I still THINK I climb hard.
So my question is to those oldies but hardies out there........
Who did YOU used to be?

kinda like a cloud i was up way up in the sky and i was feeling some feelings you wouldn't believe sometimes i don't believe them myself and i decided i was never coming down
just then a tiny little dot caught my eye it was just about too small to see
but i watched it way too long and that dot was pulling me down
i was up above it
i was up above it
now i'm down in it
i was up above it
i was up above it
now i'm down in it
well shut up so what what does it matter now
i was swimming in the haze now i crawl on the ground
and everything i never liked about you is kind of seeping into me
try to laugh about it now but isn't it funny how everything works out ("i guess the jokes on me" she said)
i was up above it
i was up above it
now i'm down in it
i was up above it
i was up above it
now i'm down in it
i used to be so big and strong
i used to know my right from wrong
i used to never be afraid
i used to be somebody
i used to have something inside
now just this hole that's open wide
i used to want it all
i used to be somebody
i'll cross my heart and hope to die but the needle's already in my eye
and all the world's weight is on my back and i don't even know why
and what i used to think was me is just a fading memory
i looked him right in the eye and said "goodbye"
i was up above it
i was up above it
now i'm down in it
i was up above it
i was up above it
now i'm down in it
that 'prolly sums it up... that and a haircut.

Well Jack, it is a sad thing to say, but climbing hard just don't mean jack! Muahahahahahaha! Is the rest of your life hard too?
But!!!!!! It's still the same principle at work; "You get out of it what you put into it!". Are you still having fun? Are you still pulling as hard as you think you can? Well, if you are, then that my friend, is as good as it gets. What more would you ask for?

When asked, "Hey didn't you used to be Bob D'Antonio the climber?" the real Bob D'Antonio would have kneecapped the questioner.
What did D'Antonio answer the guy? Bet he just cracked up.

There's a good story about Thurgood Marshall, the first black person to be a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. In those days, everyone shared an elevator going up and down, and it wasn't long since Washington had been a segregated town. Often Marshall was the only black in the elevator. It was an old style elevator, and in the Supreme Court building everyone was well dressed and such. A fair number of people, including some quite distinguished lawyers, assumed that Marshall was the guy who ran the elevator. He apparently delighted in playing along, presumably trolling for the priceless reaction he'd get when the justices filed into court.

Actually Bob would have kneecapped the fellow but he looked at me and I just said, "Don't do it Bob, don't do it......"
He just looked at the guy and snarled "I can still climb harder than your mother". Bob can still be a gentleman when he remembers how. Another classic Boulder moment.

I don't know how it happened but sometime along the way I woke up and just did not feel very gnarley anymore.
I've tried, really tried hard to get that edge but I think it's gone. If being Jack don't mean Jack then will people start calling me Jackie? And do I punch them out if they do?
Jack (or Jacque, or JAC but NEVER jackie)

That some funny sh#t Jack. Jack stills tried to act hardass...but like most of us get put in his place by his better half...Pam. I know better than to talk back to my wife.
As to the story...I was in the Garden of the Gods and some kid was looking at me kinda strange...walks up to me and says...didn't you used to Bob D'Antonio...weren't you all Italian looking with curly hair....I just laughed my ass off.
I with Tar on this one...Jack USED to be a badass...post up some stuff on that incredible climbing career of yours.
Jack...I'm the GM.
