I spent a month in Josh back in 1980 or something, and some dude takes us around to a couple of the "Space Stations." I remember one was this huge boulder with a little hole that you would slither through and it opened up into this nice room. If it had been in my back yard, it would have been a great place to hide from my mom and go for the spleef.
Another one was across the road in Real Hidden Valley, you climb up this gully, which turns into a long, narrow,slot, but there is a great ledge for your feet. You come out on the second pitch ledge of some route on the other side.
There were supposed to be tons of them. We went to a few more, but that part of my brain was lost in an old hard drive failure.
Where are the other hundred odd space stations?

The Space Station on Chimney rock in HVCG was a great spot to do your "stuff"
I liked the moves getting in and out, always interesting with your hands full
Good spot for sunsets, if I remember it was called Space station 1

I believe that Space Station 2 is now called Hobbit Hole.
I remember trying to find it one night with it snowing, what an adventure

That's a fun story there Kevin, about the naming of the Space Stations.
Lou Bartlett once took Erik Erickson and I on the “Observatory Tour”: this was a most remarkable linkup of natural hollows starting behind the Peyote Cracks and carrying on through the Wonderland, ending near Uncle Willy's.
One of these structures was like a Flintstones house: a hollow room with a natural window, others were pods entered from the side, while one the most atounding was like a hollowed out mushroom cap made of rock, with a hole in the lid and you can stick your head out of the top!

If enough of us remember enough of these spots, maybe we could do a tour one night during SushiFest. (After drinking lots of saki and Kirin, of course.)

I always knew it as Space Station 29. WTF?
Got a story, wonder if Fish remembers this one. Hanging out in the Space Station, must have been 1980, my first time to Josh.
Perhaps we were tossing beer cans, or maybe it was the billowing smoke eminating from the Space Station; in any case, something attracted the Rangers. Next thing we know, bright flashlights are flashing, a Ranger is shouting threats to apprehend us. Scrambling back out the traverse, we all dispersed different directions, I followed Mike Frericks to the top, super sketch solo in the dark. There we hung out until the Rangers were gone, then descended near Pinched Rib.
I've gone back since and can't really figure out how we soloed to the top from there. Maybe I just imagined the whole thing.

That Observatory Tour thing sounds so fun! I would love to try that at SushiFest....
Ansd what about the "Chasm of Doom?" I have heard it called some other name, but it's that quasi-caving route that goes under Gateway Rock in Real Hidden Valley.
And also...the cool pictographs in that littl ehollow-out under the rock in RHV. I'd be very into seeing other examples of that sort of thing, if anyone can show me around sat SushiWeen...(don't post too detailed online, to protect the innocent(and fragile, sites).

That photo brings back some fond memories. I remember hearin' a story about the space station from Watusi around '84. It was about a loud mouthed guy late at night with a bottle of jack, and the desert floor 45 feet below. Both fell only one broke. Poetic justice?

Seems like every clique has its' own name for these places and claims them as their own.
I was introduced to the "birth canal", Chasm of Doom" as the "Pizza Oven" (I suspect they are all the same) We couldn't find it post Landers. That may be due to old timers disease and not the quake though.
Spent a night once in a comfortable cave on top of The Wall, hiding the flame of the stove and the smokes from the rangers looking for the owner of the unacounted for motorcycle.

May the number confusion comes from the Vogel guides. I think I remember the purple guide identifying it as Space Station 29, or 27 or something.

Nice post Warbler. I've definitely had my share of "Vision Quest" experiences in the park. All Good. The waining light in the west, the edge of darkness creeping over the sky, the shapes of the rocks, colors dissolving in the clouds. . . Excellent Space Station story.
