Saturday November 18th, it was 6AM: still dark and below freezing in Flagstaff as I packed my truck. The forecast was sun, sun and more sun. Warm in JTree? In my fifteen years of journeys to our beloved park I don't recall ever being truly warm. But warm it was. I hit the road by 7:30 AM. I was right on time to meet up with a long-time friend at Russ and Susan's (AKA Mussy and The Boss) place in Twentynine Palms. I hadn't seen Chris Trudeau in years. I arrived on time.
Sushi was on the menu for later that day so we headed up to Indian Cove to get a few routes in. We went up to Condor Rock and Wonder Bluffs. Chris lead Toxic Poodle and then I lead The Falcon (both 10b's). I was quickly reminded that TJree has more than a few chossy routes. These are OK routes and a great way to get your head back into the sharp end after two months on the couch. My goal for the trip was nothing more than to work off a bit of the 10 lb sushi roll I'm carrying around my waist. We finished with an attempt on Pencil Neck Geek which I failed miserably on. A Cub Scout leader saw me hanging there not moving and decided to check us out to see if we needed help. That was a hoot. As the shadows were getting long we headed back to the Mussy Estate for a Sushi meal.
Sushi Chef in Dah House!!!
After sushi we retired to the Poker Table: $.20/$.40 limit hold'em. The Players: Mussy, The Boss, Trudeau, Jingy, G_Gnome, Elcap1973, Trudeau and Me.
The next day we headed over to Jumbo. The rock quailty here is fantastic. Around the World is a great climb. Too Bad Jingy got out played.
After half a dozen routes or so we headed back the Mussy Ranch for Italian food and more poker.
Off to Split Rock the next day for some real action. Therapeutic Tyranny was a meatfest. We all got outplayed on this route. Comedy on a rope. A blood bath - especially for Russ.
We finished up the day on the uber-classic Rubicon.
Back to the Mussy Castle for a night of Mexican food and BEER!
It would be a shame not to mention that rest of the crew:
Cracker:
Jake (AKA Jackass):
Queen of the dog bed - Summit:
And the visitor - George:
No pictures of George - Summit had him hiding under a cactus out of fear most of the time.
Ah... The Mussy Estate:
This is where Mussy Breaks things:
This is where Mussy Makes things:
This is where Mussy Sprays on SuperTaco Day and Night
This is where we stumble to when we're really drunk (and fall down)
Here is where Mussy Trains (note: hardly used anything):
Strange things live in these parts....
On the fourth day of the journey we headed out to Real Hidden Valley then on over to the Rusty Wall. O'Kelly's Crack and Wangerbanger have to be some of the best cracks in the Park.
Another Night at the Mussy Casa - this time American Food:
We called this "the side car" (I grazed salad):
And another night of Poker:
Happy Birthday Jingy:
Russ Preparing to get slaughtered:
Will ready to have his flush crushed by my flopped boat (after I played 35o!)
Susan flashing that smile in hopes it'll help her 34s get somewhere:
Poor Russ Getting his pocket rockets clobbered by KQo (He's the hand with the BandAid™)
My eights take down one of the biggest pots of the trip:
The next (and final) day we headed out Geology Tour Road to Light Sabre. Russ had the brilliant idea to hang a TR on an overhanging offwidth - Between a Rock and a Hard Place. He proceeded to get really bloody (though in good style). (where's the video?!?!?!)
After five straight days I was wasted from all the climbing. We headed back to the Mussy Shack and pounded many more beers and downed Thai food.
The weather was awesome. The new friends and old that I left behind are already missed. The climbing was a blast. Maybe it was the beer - I came back 4 lbs heavier.
Thanks again Russ and Sue for letting me crash on your garage floor. See ya'll sooner than later I hope!
BTW, you got outplayed.

I'm curious to hear how poker went after I left. Did the degenerate gambler (Euro brief guy) take down the house?
Five is not a field number, Sir.

That was the big hand of the night?! What, did you all get conservative with your money after you took all of mine?
Hey, it was damn fun and thanks again for the feast Nature. I might have made it back for another round but the wife wouldn't let me out to play a second night when I didn't get home till after 2am.

I didn't *take* all your money. You gave it away. And I had to get all conservative on the third night - I didn't get many cards (which is why I started playing 35o). By biggest hand I meant biggest pot. I had close to the nuts and people kept trying to raise me off of it.
The best hand I saw on the third night was 99. I limped in with them and got rivered. Next hand caught the same thing so I raised and everyone folded.
Ah yes... home at 2AM. How did that story go again? You went out for some sugar for your wife around dinner time and showed up at home around 2AM empty handed.
Glad you enjoyed the feast. It was a pleasure to make it for everyone.

That is NOT a jacket. That baby is a full length coat. It gets cold in the desert at night and if the movable fireplace isn't on your side of the table that thing is handy.
So, was Susan the big winner of the week?

Not sure what you mean. It's real close to Light Sabre. Mussy set up a TR. He went first. That was a blood bath. He left flesh all over the place. Will started up the thing but when the going got rought he lowered. I took my licks but managed the TR-flash. The rest of the crew was smart enough to not tie in.
and WTF is Jingy posing with all that gear for?
