Hey Ken, what's the story? First I have heard/seen of this.

Who made the flowers, took the picture?

I agree that Chuck doesn't look too happy--not his style, at least in later years. For that matter, Royal doesn't look so excited himself--Tom is the only one smiling.

Cool picture. But, again what is the story? 1961 was too early for 'flowers in the hair,' SF hippy sh#t.

Also, anyone recognize what shoes brands they are wearing? What are the patches on Chuck's shoes--inside and out?

Shoes must be Kronies?
I don't think the Fabbiano or Pivetta Muir Trail were in production then; Tom's shoes have a fairly blunt toe, maybe not a Kronie.

I've seen this photo before...

Tom's and Chuck's look like Kronies with the low heel. But Royal's shoes look like they have a thicker heel. Maybe Chuck just had red laces and patches.

I beleive they are supposed to be olive branch crowns like the old olympians.

Yeah Ken, that's what they look like, but as long ago as 1961 was, it was well past the Olympian age. There is a back ground story here. A feminine or ironic touch. You don't fine perfect yellow flowers atop El Cap.

Photo and feminine touch by Tom's girlfriend/wife-to-be/ex-to-be Dorene Frost (née Del Fium). Royal's girl (not Liz) was there too and involved in the wreathing. Unclear whether Chuck had a winsome lass bother to show up, maybe why he was so pissed off.

Perhaps some forensic analysis on the shadows?

Nearly 45 years ago now.

I thought you would come through for on us on this one Ryan. Is this is in the literature somewhere (not in Robbins' account of the second ascent with Tom) or are you channeling?

I was going to mention that it seemed like a female might have something to do with it. I did not want to insult any one.

I think this is one of the better and more arcane photos from the era.

It has whimsy.
It shows a spoofy and regal touch.

Roger, I just know stuff. It comes to me. Ament's Robbins bio has a bit on this and a gaggle of pictures, including the one of them chucking their champagne glasses over the rim. Janie was the name of Royal's girl.

And I agree, a great shot. Another is that one of Pratt walking the railing up on Glacier Point.
