OK, so I get this email from my friend Sarah and it was too funny not to share:

19% of smart phones get dropped down the toilet; only a brave few basejump to their rocky death

Illegal basejumper fatally injured on Saturday: declared deceased on Monday

Yosemite Valley, Lower Cathedral Spire- Purple Blackberry Curve 8340 jumped out of climber's summit pack, plummeting 150' to a rocky landing. Ms. Curve was not instantly killed, and initially appeared to be in stable condition, despite loss of vital component: back-of-phone. On Monday October 24, 2011 at 2:48pm Ms. Curve suddenly became non-responsive, succumbing to her fatal injuries.

Ms. Curve is survived by close friends: I-pod Nano IV, sailcloth wallet, Matrix car keys and Kleen Kanteen. She will be remembered for dutifully coming when called for defying her low bandwidth -- nearly regularly providing access to the Verizon G3 network.

Following a 24-hr period of mourning, Ms. Curve was replaced by a Droid. Sadly, she will not be missed.

Friends are encouraged to send their respects via email to xxxxxxxx; please include your phone number.

Sad news - but that's one phone that won't be calling YOSAR to report that it doesn't need a rescue.

Geeze, why did Sarah let her climb without a helmet!

Very cute. :-)

I'd say the cause of death was, technically, a fall while climbing without a rope.

But could the accident have been prevented or mitigated had the victim been wearing a prophylactic, e.g. a helmet?

A helmet would undoubtedly have saved her life. I read it on the internet.

Hmmmm, I can see that title releasing some emotions and causing someone to brace for the worst, for a friend or acquaintance... that's what it did for me. Glad everyone is ok. Cheers!

I wouldn't rule out foul play. The entire Blackberry network did go down for a day or two recently, upseting users of the device. This "accident" may have been retribution for that event...

Or Gertie may have been involved, in which case it would have been fowl play.

Too bad. She's missing out on (finally!) the release of Angry Birds on the Curve.

Once dropped a Treo in an aluminum case about 50' down behind a basalt column out at Beacon - it rang for the rest of the day, but is still down there...
