Anybody good with id-ing these things? I always though it was a bamoo handle one, but I'm not sure. Shown with original model Lowe Hummingbird ("the EB of ice climbing!")

More to the point is this the kind they were getting big bucks fo on Ebay not long ago?

anyone care to bid on these before they go over to eBay/

i also have these other tools I might part with;

i can take more photos even shine 'em up. all tools have been used in the field but are in good shape.

Jay got a closer shot of the shaft of that North wall Hammer?

It looks like bamboo. Is the shaft made of laminations of wood ?
(closer pic? )

I have both of the tools you show in the pics. As far as I know the Zero came out with a laminated bamboo handle (at least mine did), and I'm not sure if Chouinard ever made them with anything else. Have no idea of the value in $$'s, if any.

The Zero Hammer has a laminated bamboo shaft. Sometimes we would pine tar the bamboo to seal it and help with the grip. More than a few of those got way over-driven and took a while to dislodge. Remember the all important swing weight?

Jaybro that looks like a bamboozler to me- I just put my old pair of Supergators on ebay- sell your NWH and some retro guy will be in teen heaven

Classic Humming bird- that thing looks like it was the first off the line!

hobo-dan: The first version of the Lowe Hummingbird ice-hammer did not have the drill hole in the head with the cable through it for a wrist-loop attachment, like Jay-Bro's does.

I think Hummingbird first hit the market in late 1976.

I bought a pair and drilled 1/4" holes in the fiberglass handles for a nylon wrist-loop.

My waterfall climbing that winter was "vastly improved."

No problems for me!

Within a year or two: Lowe upgraded to the hole and cable and mentioned that it was a "bad idea" to alter their original design. (alterations also voided the warrenty).

I still have one of my -----unbroken originals with drill-hole and wrist sling.

Here's one of the original ads.

you might try calling ime in north conway. they used to have a random selection of old hummingbird parts downstairs in the consignment shop. i had a hummingbird. learned how to climb ice on it. i'll check but i think i ditched all my spare parts when i sold it.
