Socks knocked off, I lay there in the infirmary, the Road to Unlimited DEVOtion's impact palpable. The GREATful Dead, or is it Grateful Dead, I wondered.
I'd been sick for a day or so and St. Mary's College had an infirmary as well as a refectory. I think the refectory and the cafeteria menu were rather at odds, culture-wise, but then the whole school seemed to be in Catholic-traditionalist mud, old school warring against new school, the new school slowly edging out the old.
The diganosis was flu, officially. It was Thanksgiving, 1966, and I wasn't going home. They allowed me to bring my Sony transistor into the room. I think it was a room, not a ward. Details. Important, but not essential.
In trying to sift through the various accounts of various Deadheads, I'm becoming mired in details. "I saw it." "I saw it, too. But you were too stoned to remember." Boggle-minded, I have trouble deciding whether it was Christmas (NO, I was definitely in Merced working that vacation) and not Thanksgiving, whether I heard the song on the AM band or on the FM band (KMPH & Tom Donahue's pals), and I couldn't tell you why the AM guys were playing a cut from an LP, if they were, or if they were holding a 45 newly-pressed.
No way could I say if it was a two-minute version or a longer one, or any of that. I did not know, I guess (my mem fails me once again) that the Grateful Dead was the same band which I'd seen at a St. Mary's concert featuring the Jefferson Airplane and a band called The Warlocks who morphed into the Dead. This had been in October, '66.
McGannahan Skjellyfetti, now, him I remember.
Lyrically, it’s something of an attempt to capture the Haight scene in a bottle, inviting everyone to “come and join the party every day.” (Ironically, the second fan-club newsletter from May describes the Haight being swamped with tourists, staring at the hippies!)
Garcia said, “The Golden Road was our effort at nailing down some of that feeling, I guess. That was sort of our group writing experience before Hunter was with us. We kept it simple. But what can you say? ‘We took a bunch of acid and had a lot of fun?’”
"Complacency and the desire to be lulled into inaction by creature comforts and a false sense of plenty were the 20th century norms. The Golden Road was a way out of the trap."

Do you have, by any chance, some Tiltin' cheese?
But where do they get their meat for the more expensive burritos? They will not say, but I have my suspicions.

I'm well, thanks, Gnome. I been where those chilly winds don't blow.
Got around a lot of the town's main part yesterday. Down Main to G and down G to 21st and up 21st to the Courthouse and back to here. Maybe two miles.
Stops at various spots. Truckin' fast between, except on G, where there was lots to see.
As you can see, I got a coffee-to-go at Coffee Bandits, checked out their new art display, Mexican-inspired collage by Sophia Prado.[Click to View YouTube Video]

I then proceeded down the street, in a southeasterly Di-rection, milord.
I came to St. Vincent de Paul's where I met Wayne, the mgr, and the driver who shall remain nameless due to what probably amounts to a mental glitch, as my tekkie My-Eye would say. Details. Names are not details. Ask Froyd.
Wayne, seeing my interest in the abstract as a subject, which was pointed out to him by the driver (we'll call him Chuck, otay?), brought out a "find" which he wanted to show me.
Corot's art was fueled by a profound love of the natural world. I know less than most about art, but this was easy to identify because I'd seen his work in Art 101 and the red-inked label on the back, "#19 - Morning at the Lake - Corot" told me the story.
I figured it would look good in my own studio. It does.
In addition, Wayne brought out this commemorative item to show, a real gem for aviation history buffs.Plein Aire Show
Orly Love & Dallas Fielding
Flying Nuns named Sally wielding
Heavy cannon short-range missles
The bombs explode a bullet whistles
We're hit we're hit we're going down
Gonna ditch in that lake
A very brazen Corot fake
I hope the geese and ducks don't mind
I'm painting this while flying blind

Speaking of ground, I broke ground today.
I changed toothpaste today--
from Aim Multi-Benefit Ultra Mint Cavity Pro to Colgate Total Clean Mint.
A price-conscious decision, as it is every time the old dental hygiene product runs out. In a year's time, I could go through maybe 8 to 10 brands, depending on what they are currently stocking at Grocery Outlet.
I used a brand new backpack today--
a brand which I doubt has been reviewed here by the expert ST Gear Reviewers, C Sport. Decker gave it to me. It's in El Capitan HS colors blue and black, has a pretty decent load capacity, one main section with two-way zipper, and one smaller one in back of that with a one-toggle zipper, and a rear flap compartment with a velcro closure. There is the proud name "Associated Feed & Supply Co." stitched on the flap. There is no padding in the shoulder straps, but one mesh side pocket for a water container. I loaded it up with about twenty-five pounds and lugged one paid-for plastic reusable bag of stuff as well. It was like summer, the temp was up there walking the sidewalk, but it felt good. Perseverance, dedication, and the fact there was no food in the place I call home got me through the experience. No shots were taken, no shots were fired, and when I got home, I wasn't all that tired.
So I made some coffee.
I also bought a new type of coffee today using the same guidelines as the toothpaste--
need and cost and availability. I figured the Yuban would do, as the Folger's container was empty, there was none at the store, and there was the Yuban, which is good coffee, for just $4.99. Only thing is, I used two scoops not three in pressing it, coupled with a third less water, not wanting a whole pot and knowing it's bad for my blood pressure, especially in the afternoon. But it tasted like dishwater and I've learned a valuable lesson, re-learned, actually. Never make less than the standard pot-ful. You won't win unless you are a scientist and take notes, etc.
It's the time of the month where dining at the Cinema is curtailed due to lack of money, the Comcast people are calling about my overdue bill already, and I have enough to cover the utility bill and a little more for the food, though I managed to stock up on beans and potatoes and rice today.
And so, fair warning, I may have to go on the Dark Side again this month internet-access-wise. I hope you understand. I'm not a money manager. I would not last in the halls of the Vatican Bank, on Wall St., or as a small businessman. Money is not a motivator, only a tool. It is not an end in itself, but it seems there is never quite enough, and there is NEVER any left over at the calends.
This has been Mouse from Merced speaking to you from the steps of the Great Pyramid of Woe, high atop the Ides of March Tower, and wondering how I'll get down.

. . . and so, Sir Mouse, after an evening of Miss Marple and needlepoint, I now find that, given your missive above, I might contribute this to your evening:
On the edge of the coin is an inscription of the quotation 'Something Will Turn Up', spoken by Wilkins Micawber in David Copperfield - said to have been Dickens's own favourite story.

I find that, actually, something does turn up. Pretty much every time, but not always on my personal timetable. :)
Peace and Light,
ff
